Paul Lash

Friendship — Paul W. Lash, 94, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017.

Born in Friendship June 4, 1923, he was the son of Robert and Levilda Newbert Lash. He attended Friendship schools.

At the age of 19, Paul joined the Army and fought in Italy during World War II, as part of the 45th Infantry Brigade Thunderbirds. Wounded while fighting for our country, he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Upon returning from the war, Paul worked at Bath Iron Works and later for his brother Winfield Lash, of Lash Brothers’ Boat Yard.

In 1951, he married Lucille Newbert. They lived in California for three years, returning to Maine in 1954. In 1959, Paul and Lucille settled in Friendship, where they owned and operated Friendship Market until 1977.

After his retirement, Paul continued to work with his brother Douglas on carpentry projects. He enjoyed traveling, going fishing and most of all, spending time with his family.

He was an active member of the Advent Christian Church of Friendship. In his younger days, when a project needed to be done, he would volunteer his help and expertise.

Other than his wife, Lucille, and his parents, Paul was predeceased by sisters Eleanor Lash, Mary Wotton and her husband, Alfred, Myra Maxcy and her husband, Harlan; brothers John and his wife, Loretta, Austin, Winfield and his wife, Barbara, Robert and his wife, Katherine, Harold and his wife, Elsie, Douglas; brothers-in-law Benny Kaler and Robert Lane.

Paul is survived by his son, Stephen Lash and his wife, Lorraine; his daughter, Karen Balser, and her husband, Tony, all of Friendship; his grandchildren, Rachel Korenkiewicz and her husband, Justin, of Waldoboro, Sarah and Isaac Lash of Friendship, Hannah Rackliff and her husband, Logan, of St. George, Jennifer Pollert and her husband, Taylor, of Nashville, Tenn., Andrew Balser and his wife, Cassie, of Friendship; three great-grandsons Eli, Zachary and Sammy Korenkiewicz of Waldoboro; a great-granddaughter, Bailey Balser, of Friendship; brothers Howard Lash and his wife, Lois, Philip and his wife, Janice; sisters Carolyn Kaler, Esther Lane, all of Friendship; sisters-in-law Lucille Lash, Sally Clark and her husband, Don, all of Tucson, Ariz.; a special niece, Linda Simmons, who took tender care of Paul; as well as many, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Old Village Cemetery, Friendship. The Rev. Alan Chamberlin will officiate.

I remember Paul while growing up in Friendship. A nice family, he and many of his siblings who did a lot to enrich my life as a foster child! You never forget those kind acts or the ones who do them. I always try to pay that forward, I remember the impact it had for me! He will be dearlt missed!! Thoughts and prayers to the entire family during this time of sorrow!
