Parent elected to lead Knox County Commission

Rockland — Richard Parent Jr. was elected Tuesday, Jan. 8, chairman for the Knox County Commission.

The veteran Warren public official will serve in the position for the next year on the three-member board.

Parent represents Cushing, Friendship, St. George, Union, Warren and Washington.

He was first elected to the Knox County Commission in 2008, then reelected in 2012 and 2016. His current term runs through 2020.

Parent retired as a 39-year employee of the Maine Department of Transportation.

He has also served as a selectman in Warren.

Parent was elected unanimously to the post of board chair.

Sharyn Pohlman of Rockport was elected vice chair. She is serving her first four-year term on the board, having been elected in 2016.

Dorothy Meriwether was attending her first meeting as a commissioner. The South Thomaston woman was elected in November for a four-year term.

Meriwether is the fifth woman to serve as a Knox County commissioner.
