Panthers sweep Mariners, Windjammers ease past Lions, Vikings split in finales

Playoffs on-deck as diamond squads prepare to make runs at regional titles

A bevy of Midcoast high school baseball and softball teams swung, pitched, threw and ran for potential late-season wins on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 1-2, as many of those high school diamond squads discovered the victory formula.

On Wednesday, Camden Hills collected a pair of wins over Belfast as softball won 10-5 and baseball 6-3, while Medomak Valley did the same over Oceanside as baseball bested the Mariners 8-1 and softball team swung to a 12-0, five-inning win.

On Thursday, Searsport split home games with Orono, while the Panthers split with county rival Lincoln Academy of Newcastle.

The following is a recap of reported results:

Baseball

Medomak Valley 8, Oceanside 1

At Rockland June 2, the Panthers prowled past the Mariners in the regular-season finale for the opponents. Medomak Valley scored three runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and three in the fifth, while Oceanside plated one in the fifth.

The Panther offense was led by Blake Morrison (2 hits, 3 RBIs), Garret Hutchins (hit), Ethan Reed (2 singles, 2 RBIs), Hayden Staples (run), Max Moody (double, run, RBI), Isaac McCollett (run), Noah Crosby (2 singles, 3 runs) and Aiden Starr (2 singles, 2 runs).

For the Mariners, Nathan Coombs (2 singles), Bowen Brann (hit), Alex Bartlett (home run), Nathaniel Barnard (hit) and Connor Calderwood (hit) paced the offense.

Matt Holbrook went the distance on the bump for the visitors and allowed seven hits and no walks, with nine strikeouts. Barnard, Will Eaton, Brann and Coombs pitched for the hosts and allowed 10 hits and six walks, with seven strikeouts.

The opponents made one error apiece, while the Panthers stranded nine runners and Mariners four.

Camden Hills 6, Belfast 3

At Rockport June 2, the Windjammers sailed past the Lions with a three-run victory. Camden Hills scored three runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and one in the sixth, while Belfast plated one in the third and two in the fifth.

The Windjammers were led at the dish by Sam Moody (hit), Liam O’Neal (3 hits, 2 runs), Matt Kremin (2 hits, 3 runs, RBI), Aiden Schecter (hit, 2 RBIs), Obie Miller (2 hits, run, RBI), Hunter Norton (hit, RBI), Hunter Bell (RBI) and Cam Brown (hit).

For the Lions, Tanner Veilleux (2 hits, 2 runs), Tommy Walker (hit), Chris Kelley (run, 2 RBIs) and Keegan McGowan (RBI) paced the offense.

Bell and O’Neal pitched for Camden Hills, as the duo allowed three hits and five walks, with 11 strikeouts. Jason Bartlett, Walker and Eamon Goscinski pitched for Belfast and allowed 11 hits and three walks, with six strikeouts.

Medomak Valley 10, Lincoln Academy 4

At Waldoboro June 1, the Panthers prowled past the Eagles and prevailed by six runs. Medomak Valley plated five runs in the second inning, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth, while Lincoln Academy plated one in the first and three in the sixth.

The Panthers were led at the plate by Blake Morrison (run, RBI), Garret Hutchins (run, 2 RBIs), Isaac Simmons (hit, run, RBI), Hayden Staples (hit, run), Max Moody (4 hits, 2 runs, RBI), Noah Crosby (hit, 2 runs), James Day (run, RBI), and Aiden Starr (2 hits, run, 2 RBIs).

For the Eagles, Nathan True (hit, run), Spencer Gamage (hit), Nick Prior (hit, run, RBI), Adam Sirois (2 hits, run), Ben Sawyer (run), Cedar Cannon (RBI) and Myles Wotton (hit, 2 RBIs) paced the offense.

Isaac McCollett and Isaac Simmons pitched for Medomak Valley, as the duo allowed six hits and two walks, with eight strikeouts. Griffin Bond and Wotton pitched for Lincoln Academy and allowed nine hits and 11 walks, with five strikeouts.

Orono 9, Searsport 5

At Searsport June 1, the Red Riots benefited from a nine-run sixth inning, which was more than enough to knock off the host Vikings. Searsport scored one in the third, three in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The Vikings were led at the plate by Nate Ashey (run, RBI), Cole Ellis (RBI), Cody Reynolds (single, RBI), Josh Wright (single, run, stolen base), Chase Brassbridge (run), Drew Bagley (single), Ashton Ellis (run), Gabe Kneeland (single, RBI) and Gage Ellis (single, run, RBI).

For the Red Riots, Zach Needham (2 singles, run), Caleb Ryder (double, single, run), Zack Dill (2 singles, 2 runs), Cam Shorette (double, single, 2 runs, stolen base), Jordan Cota (run, stolen base), Ellis Spaulding (2 singles, run, stolen base) and Henry Robertson (run) paced the offense.

Wright, Reynolds and Gage Ellis pitched for the hosts, as the group allowed 11 hits and four walks, with three strikeouts. Cota, Dill, Needham and Spaulding toed the rubber for the visitors and allowed five hits and four walks, with three strikeouts.

Softball

Camden Hills 10, Belfast 5

At Rockport June 2, the Windjammers doubled up the Lions. Camden Hills scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth, while Belfast tallied four in the first and one in the sixth.

Camden Hills was led at the plate by Alyssa Bland (4 hits, 2 RBIs), Lillia Stone (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Olivia Brown (RBI), Ava Dube (RBI) and Kennedy Peterson (RBI).

For Belfast, Mia Winslow, Hayle Withee and Anna Metcalf rapped a hit.

Maggie Blemaster and Stone pitched for the Windjammers, as the teammates allowed four hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts. Lexi Hopkins pitched for the Lions, as she allowed allowed eight hits and two walks, with nine strikeouts.

Medomak Valley 12, Oceanside 0 (5 inns.)

At Rockland June 2, the Panthers sent the fans home early with a mercy-rule win over the Mariners. Medomak Valley scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second, one in the fourth and five in the fifth.

The Panthers were led at the plate by Aly Creamer (single, 2 runs, stolen base), Grace White (single, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Natalie Stewart (single, RBI, 2 runs), Bella LaFrance (run), Addison McCormick (run), Lucy Jameson (single, 2 runs, RBI), Haley Puchalski (double, 2 singles, run, RBI, stolen base), Eliza Spear (2 singles, 3 RBIs), E. Harris (single, RBI), Eliza Nelson (RBI, run, stolen base) and Emma Kunesh (single).

For the Mariners, Jess Watkinson (2 singles) and Grace Woodman (single) paced the offense.

Adrianna Whitamore pitched for Oceanside and allowed 11 hits and five walks, with four strikeouts. Madi Boynton pitched for Medomak Valley, as she tossed a three-hit shutout, walked none and struck out six.

Searsport 6, Orono 1

At Searsport June 1, the Vikings scored slow and steady throughout the seven-inning affair and bested the Red Riots. Searsport scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and two in the third, while Orono scored in the sixth.

The hosts were led at the dish by Jordan Greeley (single), Makenzie Alley (single, run), Ana Lang (triple, 2 singles, 2 runs), Sarah Gent (2 singles), Samantha Perkins (single, run), Hunter Kronholm (single), Kyla Perkins (single, run) and Emma Spiegel (single, run).

For the visitors, Emma Labelle (single), Chloe Labree (single, run), Olivia Ronco (2 singles), Abby Deschaine (2 singles) and Rileigh Andre (single) paced the offense.

Lang pitched for the Vikings, as she allowed seven hits and no walks, with 14 strikeouts.

Lincoln Academy 4, Medomak Valley 1

At Waldoboro June 1, the Eagles scored three unanswered runs in the late innings and soared past the Panthers. Medomak Valley scored in the third, while Lincoln Academy scored one in the second, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.

The Panthers were led at the plate by Aly Creamer (2 singles, run), Natalie Stewart (single) and Grace White (2 singles).

For the Eagles, Payson Kaler (2 singles, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases), Grace Houghton (double), Natalie Kaler (run) and Maddy York (run) paced the offense.

Houghton pitched for the visitors and allowed five hits and one walk, with nine strikeouts. Creamer pitched for the hosts and allowed three hits and six walks, with eight strikeouts.
