Waldoboro — Conditioning is one of the most important factors in preseason practices, a time to get student-athletes ready for the official season, and on Thursday, Aug. 30, the Medomak Valley boys soccer team put its conditioning to the test.

The Panthers hosted Morse of Bath, and after both teams scored during regulation, the opponents failed to do so in the first and second overtime periods, and, ultimately, settled for a 1-1 season-opening tie.

Medomak Valley’s Joey Horovitz scored the Panthers' lone goal. Coleman Swain recorded the assist.

Asa Houghton scored Morse’s goal on a penalty kick.

The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime.

Medomak Valley outshot Morse 8-5.

The Panthers Aiden Starr made five stops in net, while the Shipbuilders made seven stops on goal.

The Panthers got on the board first with 22:38 remaining in the first half. Horovitz broke free down the right side and beat the goalie to the far post with a shot, to put the hosts up 1-0.

Medomak Valley kept its initial goal advantage 33 minutes into the second half.

With 12 minutes remaining, a scramble in the box resulted in Panther goalie Starr diving for a ball, but he was called for taking an opponent down on the play, which resulted in a Morse penalty kick.

Houghton buried the free kick into the back of the net to tie the game.

The teams played the remainder of regulation and two OTs without again creasing the net.
