Panthers prowl to fourth at Westlake Invitational tournament

Gess, Readinger, Miller, Lash, Benner finish among top two

Bath — The final tuneup sessions before the official high school wrestling season have wound down, and Medomak Valley is one of many Midcoast mat squads to gear up, as the Panthers tangled on Saturday, Dec. 1 in the longtime Westlake Invitational preseason tournament.

Medomak Valley finished fourth among 14 teams with 121 points. Other team scores were not available.

For the Panthers, Jake Gess finished first at 220 pounds, while Gavin Readinger (113), Elias Miller (160), Elijah Lash (195) and Erik Benner (285) secured second-place finishes, Josh MacDougall was third at 120 pounds and Amos Hinkley fourth at 170 pounds.

Other teams to take part in the tournament included Cony of Augusta, Nokomis of Newport, Mount Blue of Farmington, Winslow, Morse, Hall-Dale of Farmingdale, Gardiner, Lisbon of Lisbon Falls, Mount Ararat of Topsham, Westbrook, Hyde School of Bath, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and Richmond.

The individual Medomak Valley results, with Panther wrestlers listed first, were:

106 pounds — Reece Hesseltine was pinned by Noah Dumas, Con, at 0:27; received a bye; and was pinned by Chase Nicolino, Mor, at 2:01.

113 pounds — Readinger pinned Zach Davis, West, at 1:43; beat Ahmed Ahmed, Con, 10-8, in overtime; and was pinned by Jagger Bullen, MtB, at 0:24 in the championship final. Readinger finished second.

120 pounds — MacDougall received a first-round bye; was pinned by Calvin Peck, Nok, at 2:21; beat Momo Halwah, Con, 10-5; and pinned Hunter Nile, MtB, at 4:20 in the consolation final. MacDougall finished third.

126 pounds — Marshall Sawyer was pinned by Damien Gilley, Win, at 3:22.

132 pounds — Brady Carter pinned Tony Marino, HD, at 1:27; was pinned by Ben Brewer, Mor, at 0:40; pinned Mohammad Abdalnabi, Cony, at 2:00; and was pinned by Josh Dunham, MtB, at 2:38.

138 pounds — Emily Harris was pinned by Jonny Hansen, Cony, at 0:40; and was pinned by Jose Marquez, MtB, at 0:27.

145 pounds — Colby Hyde was pinned by Khaled Alsaleh, Cony, at 0:26; received a bye; and was pinned by Jack Komilov, Mor, at 0:32.

152 pounds — Nikolas Porter was pinned by Jakob Arbour, Cony, at 0:51; and was pinned by Devyn Purrington, Gar, at 1:34.

160 pounds — Miller pinned Jeremy Harmon, Lis, at 1:58; pinned Cody Holman, MtA, at 2:51; and lost to Quinton Richards, Nok, 6-3, in the championship final. Miller finished second.

170 pounds — Hinkley pinned Casey Mills, Cony, at 3:23; lost to Daniel Bolton, Lis, 10-1; pinned Isaac Ducatt, MtA, at 3:36; and was pinned by Henri Kuntz, West, at 2:40 in the consolation final. Hinkley finished fourth.

182 pounds —Tyler Cox lost to Mason Hultman, MtA, 3-1; pinned Jack Scott, Hyde, at 2:25; and was pinned by Ishan Myers, Mor, at 2:15.

195 pounds — Lash pinned Shelby Ostrowski, MCI, at 0:25; pinned Christian St. Hillaire, Lis, at 4:30; and was pinned by Nic Mills, Cony, at 2:35 in the championship final. Lash finished second.

220 pounds — Gess pinned Nate Curtis, Rich, at 1:33; pinned John Howard, MtB, at 4:52; and pinned Mohammed Aljendi, Cony, at 0:40 in the championship final. Gess finished first.

285 pounds — Benner pinned Hunter Gleason, MtB, at 3:26; pinned Andy Murray, MtA, at 0:19; pinned Mitchell McFarland, Cony, at 4:30; and was pinned by James Boyd, Nok, at 4:54 in the championship final. Benner finished second.
