Panthers, Mariners hold own — and more — in regional meet

Medomak Valley second to Wells, Miller, Benner win titles, 10 area athletes qualify for states

Fryeburg — The Midcoast was well-represented at the Class B South high school wrestling championships on Saturday, Feb. 9 as reigning Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B champion Medomak Valley of Waldoboro and Oceanside of Rockland turned in strong performances at Fryeburg Academy.

While the four-athlete Mariners finished 10th among 14 teams, the Panthers were the “best of the rest” on the day as they prowled to a second-place finish.

Medomak Valley racked up an impressive 143 points, but were well behind eventual champion Wells, who amassed 216.5 points. Oceanside collected 34 points.

Eli Miller and Erik Benner secured individual championships in the 160- and 220-pound classes, while Gavin Readinger (2nd at 113), Josh MacDougall (3rd at 120), Marshall Sawyer (4th at 126), Brady Carter (3rd at 132), Amos Hinkley (3rd at 170) and Tyler Cox (3rd at 182) — along with Miller and Benner — earned berths at the state Class B championships, slated for Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9:30 a.m. at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln.

Miller also collected his 100th career pin when he defeated Evan Cash of Wells in the 160-pound championship match.

Oceanside’s Alex Fogarty, a former state champion, placed second at 152 and Kaleb Blackwell fourth at 195 and the two Mariners also qualified for the state championships.

The team scores were: Wells 216.5, Medomak Valley 143, Lisbon/Oak Hill 122, Mountain Valley of Rumford 113.5, Mount View of Thorndike 85, Dirigo of Dixfield 81, Winslow 45, Madison 42, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 36, Oceanside 34, Fryeburg Academy 28, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 18, Monmouth Academy 16 and Richmond 7.

The individual Medomak Valley and Oceanside results were:

106 pounds — Reese Hesseltine (19-20 season record, with 4 pins), Med, received a bye; was pinned by Matt Kennard, Mad, at 4:25; received a bye; and was pinned by Sam Schmitt, Win, at 1:38.

Joshua Smalley, Ocean, received a first-round bye; was pinned by Sam Schmitt, Win, at 1:30; received a bye; and lost to Matt Kennard, Mad, 17-5.

113 pounds — Gavin Readinger (38-12, 12 pins), Med, received a first-round bye; pinned Logan Morris, Dir, at 2:36; pinned Malik Keresey, MCI, at 5:53; and lost to Nate Leclair, MtVal, 22-4, in the championship final. Readinger finished second.

120 pounds — Josh MacDougall (34-6, 19 pins), Med, received a first-round bye; pinned Caio Crawford, LA, at 0:50; was pinned by Matt Miles, MtVal, at 5:57; pinned Hailey Wood, MtV, at 1:53; and pinned Evan Hasenfus, Mon, at 5:35 in the consolation final. MacDougall finished third.

126 pounds — Marshall Sawyer (33-7, 16 pins), Med, received a first-round bye; pinned Max Merrill, MtVal, at 1:38; lost to Travis Foster, Wells, 11-0; pinned Filip Nguyen, LA, at 4:00; and was pinned by Owen Libby, Dir, at 2:51 in the consolation final. Sawyer finished fourth.

132 pounds — Brady Carter (33-14, 18 pins), Med, received a first-round bye; pinned Jiles Morton, LA, at 2:13; lost to Josh Burgess, Wells, at 1:29; pinned Jordan Hastings, MtVal, at 5:57; and pinned Emma Fonger, MtV, at 3:16 in the consolation final. Carter finished third.

138 pounds — Colby Hyde (19-20), Med, received a bye; was pinned by Zach Ward, MtV, at 0:21; pinned Cordbin Drake, LA, at 1:35; and was pinned by Ben DeJesus, Dir, at 0:47.

145 pounds — Zeke Hesseltine (20-24, 9 pins), Med, received a first-round bye; was pinned by David Pelletier, Dir, at 3:19; received a bye; beat Donna Arsenault, MtVal, 14-0; and was pinned by Josiah Kenney, Lis/OaH, at 1:50.

152 pounds — Alex Fogarty, Ocean, received a first-round bye; pinned Riley Landry, Win, at 0:26; pinned Spencer Poulin, Wells, at 0:23; and lost to Anthony Mazza, MtVal, 10-8, in the championship final. Fogarty finished second.

160 pounds — Eli Miller (43-0, 31 pins), Med, received two byes; pinned Spencer Soule, Rich, at 1:35; and pinned Evan Cash, Wells, at 2:36 in the championship final. Miller finished first.

170 pounds — Amos Hinkley (43-6, 22 pins), Med, received a first-round bye; pinned Matt Brown, MountVal, at 1:50; lost to Daniel Bolton, Lis/Oah, 7-0; pinned Ely Yang, Win, at 4:49; and pinned Lucas Steinberger, LA, at 2:15 in the consolation final. Hinkley finished third.

Dylan Williams, Ocean, received a bye; was pinned by Daniel Bolton, Lis/Oah, at 3:54; received a bye; pinned Matt Brown, MountVal, at 3:50; and was pinned by Lucas Steinberger, LA, at 2:50.

182 pounds — Tyler Cox (27-8, 17 pins), Med, received a bye; pinned Bryce Bussell, MCI, at 1:40; lost to Cam Bourget, Lis/OaH, 7-2; beat Lucas Kelsey, LA, 11-2; and pinned Chase Nelson, Dir, at 1:45 in the consolation final. Cox finished third.

195 pounds — Kaleb Blackwell, Ocean, received a first-round bye; pinned Isaac Potvin, Lis/OaH, at 3:22; was pinned by Morgan Welch-Thompson, Wells, at 1:56; pinned Shelby Ostrowski, MCI, at 1:43; and was pinned by Potvin, Lis/OaH, at 3:58 in the consolation final. Blackwell finished fourth.

Elijah Lash (30-11, 16 pins), Med, received a first-round bye; pinned Logan Cloutier, Mad, at 1:43; was pinned by Darin Buono, MtVal, at 0:48; and was pinned by Potvin, Lis/OaH, at 1:44.

220 pounds — Erik Benner (49-1, 34 pins), Med, received two byes; won by injury default over Fabian Amaya, MtVal; and beat Nolan Degroot, Dir, 3-0, in the championship final. Benner finished first.

285 pounds — Tucker McDaniels-Rossiter, Med, received a first-round bye; was pinned by Braeden MacNeil, Wells, at 0:35; received a bye; and was pinned by Hunter Harris, Rich, at 0:51.
