High school golf

Panthers could swing to strong team, individual success

By Staff | Sep 02, 2017

Waldoboro — The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Medomak Valley High School golf team:

Coach/years coached current team: Kevin Richardson, second year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 4-6 regular-season record. No. 3 Medomak Valley beat No. 6 Belfast and lost to No. 2 Maine Central Institute in the league playoffs.

Roster: Senior Brent Stewart; juniors Leighton Winslow and Mavrick Young; sophomores Carson Murphy, Merritt Gould and Duncan Widdecombe; and freshmen Sean Sebrey, Natalie Stewart and Zackary Benner.

Known graduation losses: None.

Significant impact athletes: Brent Stewart, Murphy and Sebrey.

Team strength: Able to manage the courses wisely.

Team goals: To be one of the top teams in the conference and qualify for the state championships.

Top league opponents: Camden Hills of Rockport, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle and Mount View of Thorndike.

Outlook: The Panthers played their best golf of the year toward the end of last season — and given the squad graduated no players from that squad — figure to be in the mix again as one of the top team in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B North division.

“Brent Stewart led the team last year and is expected to again after having a very solid preseason playing very consistently,” said Richardson. “Carson Murphy, coming off of a very successful freshman season, has also shown potential to post some low scores.

"Other returners, including Merritt Gould and Leighton Winslow, will contribute and provide much needed depth to the team. Freshman Sean Sebrey has played well and should provide good scores for the team. With contributions from these players and the rest of the team we should be very competitive within our division and give ourselves a shot to qualify for states.”

Brent Stewart also qualified for the state Class B schoolboy individual championships last season.
