Waldoboro — If the performance of the Medomak Valley High School boys junior varsity soccer team in this fall is any indication, the next few years are going to be onward and upward for the varsity program after a terrific 11-game season.

Led by coach Paul Berube, the Panthers — comprised of four juniors, 10 sophomores and five freshmen — prowled to an 8-2-1 record.

Team members included Ian Doughty, Parker Morrison, Isaiah Staples, Aiden Sawyer, Gavin Readinger, Coleman Swain, Jack Bickmore, Patrick McKinney, Addison Mellor, Po Pfirrman, Colby Hyde, Bryce Collamore, Gavin Readinger, Damian Henry, Sawyer Hewson, Justin Mahoney, Jordan Luce-Warren, Logan Jenkins, Nathan Andrick and Tyler Cox.

“This was a fairly consistent group of players who worked well together and did their best to possess the ball with short triangular passes,” said Berube. “We were at our best when we were able to do that. We scored 35 goals on the season [and] had 11 different players score a goal. We had a lot of good passing plays leading to goals, resulting in 24 assists on the year. Our defense was strong, allowing 17 goals on the season, limiting our opponents to low quality shots.”

The leading offensive contributors for the Panthers were Doughty (8 goals, 2 assists), Morrison (9 goals, 3 assists), Staples (5 goals, 9 assists), Sawyer (6 goals, assist), Readinger (goal), Swain (goal, 3 assists), Bickmore (goal), McKinney (goal), Mellor (goal, assist), Pfirrman (goal) and Hyde (goal).

Medomak Valley also had five shutouts in net as goalie duties were split between Collamore, Readinger and Henry, while McKinney, Hewson, Readinger, Mahoney, Hyde, Luce-Warren and Jenkins “played outstanding defense on our fullback line,” said Berube, while Swain, Andrick, Pfirrman, Staples, Mellor, Henry and Cox controlled the midfield.

“I enjoyed coaching these young men and look forward to working with them in the future,” said Berube.
