P.G. Willey, Rockland Ford punch tickets to championship game

Previously unbeaten, No. 1 Penobscot Bay Dentistry upset in semifinals, title game set for July 2

Rockland — After six postseason games that featured eight teams in less than 24 hours, two squads remained to make a bid for the Midcoast Babe Ruth League’s coveted Allan T. Wilcox championship trophy.

After the dust settled at the conclusion of the semifinals on Saturday, June 30 at Morrill Field, No. 2 P.G. Willey (9-2) and No. 4 Rockland Ford (7-4) emerged from the fray and ultimately will vie for the league title on Monday, July 2 at 5 p.m. back at Morrill Field.

Semifinal scores from June 30 included: No. 4 Rockland Ford 4, No. 1 Penobscot Bay Dentistry 2 (8 inns.); and No. 2 P.G. Willey 12, No. 6 TD Bank-Rockland 2 (5 inns.).

Quarterfinal scores from June 29 included: No. 1 Penobscot Bay Dentistry 1, No. 8 Damariscotta Lions 0; No. 2 P.G. Willey 13, No. 7 Granite Coast Orthodontics 3 (6 inns.); No. 4 Rockland Ford 10, No. 5 Union Farm Equipment 6; and No. 6 TD Bank-Rockland 10, No. 3 Waldoboro 1.

In a prelim playoff game on Wednesday, June 27, No. 8 Damariscotta Lions beat No. 9 Newcastle 14-5.

The quarterfinals of the single-elimination tournament initially were scheduled for Thursday, June 28, but all four games were pushed to Friday due to rain.

The final regular-season games included: Penobscot Bay Dentistry 9-0, P.G. Willey 7-2, Waldoboro 5-4, Rockland Ford 5-4, Union Farm Equipment 4-5, TD Bank-Rockland 3-6, Granite Coast Orthodontics 3-6, Damariscotta Lions 3-6 and Newcastle 2-7.

The following is a summary of playoff games:

No. 2 P.G. Willey 12, No. 6 TD Bank-Rockland 2 (5 inns.)

At Rockland June 30, the higher seed wasted no time as it swung past upset-minded TD-Bank Rockland and advanced to the final. P.G. Willey plated a whopping nine runs in the first inning and scored three more in the third, while TD Bank-Rockland scored two in the fourth.

Leading P.G. Willey at the plate were Logan Putansu (2 runs), Matt Kremin (single, 2 runs), Sam Moody (2 singles, 2 runs), Aidan Schecter (RBI, run), Braden Moulton (single, run, 2 RBIs), Liam O’Neal (double, run), Emmit Dayhoof (single, run), Noah Thackeray (single, run) and Lucas Moody (run).

For TD Bank-Rockland, Finnegan Lynch (single), Joey Curtis (single), Aidan Munro (single, run) and Matt Spear (home run, 2 RBIs) paced the offense.

Munro, Lynch and Alec Sirois pitched for TD Bank-Rockland, as the trio allowed seven hits and 10 walks, with two strikeouts. Putansu and Schecter pitched for P.G. Willey, as the duo allowed four hits and one walk, with six strikeouts.

The first eight batters reached and scored for P.G. Willey, including a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch issued to Schecter, a two-run single by Moulton, three bases-loaded walks issued to Dayhoof, Thackeray and Putansu and another run-scoring hit by Sam Moody.

Spear got TD Bank-Rockland on the board in the fourth with a two-run blast, but the lower seed could not complete the comeback.

No. 4 Rockland Ford 4, No. 1 Penobscot Bay Dentistry 2 (8 inns.)

At Rockland June 30, the top seed rallied to knot the score in the seventh inning, but Rockland Ford plated a pair in the eighth to knock off Penobscot Bay Dentistry. Rockland Ford also scored in the first and fourth innings, while Penobscot Bay Dentistry scored in the sixth and seventh.

Leading Rockland Ford at the plate were Aidan Bonzagni (3 singles, run), Connor Calderwood (2 singles, 2 runs), Nate Coombs (double), Tim Farrelly (3 singles, run), Alex Bartlett (single) and Landon Tabbutt (single).

For Penobscot Bay Dentistry, Dylan Abbott (double, run), Bobby Banks (single) and Nate Ashey (single, run) paced the offense.

Farrelly pitched for Rockland Ford and went the full eight innings — as he retired the first 15 batters of the game — and yielded three hits, no walks and two hit batters, with seven strikeouts. Tommy Walker and Abbott pitched for Penobscot Bay Dentistry, as the duo allowed 11 hits and three walks, with 11 strikeouts.

Rockland Ford took a 1-0 lead after Calderwood singled in the first and was later doubled home by Coombs, and added another in the fourth after Farrelly singled, moved to second on a balk, motored to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.

Penobscot Bay Dentistry got its first base runner in the sixth after Ashey was hit by a pitch, who moved into scoring position on a balk.

Banks then came through with an RBI-single to right to cut the higher seed’s deficit in half.

In the seventh, Penobscot Bay Dentistry knotted the score after Abbot doubled and was plated on a bloop single to right by Ashey.

But Rockland Ford tacked on two more in the eighth after a sacrifice by Nate Coombs plated Aidan Bonzagni and Farrelly plated Calderwood on a bloop single, which was all it needed in the upset win.

No. 1 Penobscot Bay Dentistry 1, No. 8 Damariscotta Lions 0

At Belfast June 29, the hosts got the lone run of the contest in the third inning, which proved enough to oust the lower seed from the quarterfinals.

Leading Penobscot Bay Dentistry at the plate was Brandon Cournoyer (run), Patrick McConnell (double), Matt LeBlanc (single), Zepherin Leppanen (double), Nate Ashey (triple) and Kayden Richards (single).

For the Lions (first names unavailable), Wotton (2 singles) and Sherrill (single) paced the offense.

Cournoyer went the distance on the hill for Penobscot Bay Dentistry, as he allowed three hits and three walks, with four strikeouts. Wotton pitched for the Damariscotta Lions, as he allowed five hits and six walks, with eight strikeouts.

Cournoyer drew a walk and moved to second on a second walk issued to Abbott before LeBlanc plated Cournoyer — the lone run of the game — with a single.

No. 2 P.G. Willey 13, No. 7 Granite Coast Orthodontics 3 (6 inns.)

At Rockport June 29, P.G. Willey crossed the plate in bunches as they surged into the semifinals. P.G. Willey scored two in the first, five in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth, while Granite Coast Orthodontics scored one in the first and two in the second.

Leading P.G. Tausek, Sawyer Olsen, Tohanczyn and Joseph Coffey all pitched for GCO, as that group allowed 18 hits and seven walks, with three strikeouts. Sam Moody, Putansu and Schecter pitched for P.G. Willey, as the trio three hits and two walks, with five strikeouts.

No. 6 TD Bank-Rockland 10, No. 3 Waldoboro 1

At Waldoboro June 29, the visitors bounced higher-seeded Waldoboro from the postseason. TD Bank-Rockland scored three runs in the first inning, one in the third and two in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, while Waldoboro scored its lone run in the fourth.

Leading TD Bank-Rockland at the plate were Finnegan Lynch (2 singles, stolen base), Joey Curtis (2 singles, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases), Aidan Munro (2 singles, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases), Matt Spear (triple, 2 runs), Stephen Dearborn (2 singles, run), Jacoby Davis (run), Grace Pratt (run, stolen base) and Jacob Carroll (run, stolen base).

For Waldoboro, Colby Castner had the team’s lone hit, while Adam Berry scored the lone run.

Curtis, Munro and Lynch pitched for the visitors, as they allowed one hit and five walks, with eight strikeouts. Belcher, Carter and Berry pitched for the hosts, as they allowed nine hits and six walks, with three strikeouts.

No. 4 Rockland Ford 10, No. 5 Union Farm Equipment 6

At Thomaston June 29, Rockland Ford jumped to an early lead and never looked back en route to a victory over UFE. Rockland Ford scored three runs in the first inning, four in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth, while Union Farm Equipment scored thrice in the second and fourth frames.

Leading Rockland Ford at the plate were Aidan Bonzagni (triple, single, 2 runs), Connor Calderwood (2 singles), Nate Coombs (2 runs), Tim Farrelly (single, 2 runs), Jonah Carlson (single, 2 runs, stolen base), Nate Bernard (single, run, stolen base) and Landon Tabbutt (double, single, run, RBI).

Rockland Ford pitchers allowed four hits and six walks, with eight strikeouts. Union Farm Equipment pitchers allowed nine hits and two walks, with six strikeouts.

At Thomaston June 26, Rockland Ford plated a pair of runs in the seventh inning and walked off with a win over TD Bank-Rockland. Rockland Ford also scored three in the first and one in the sixth, while TD Bank-Rockland scored three in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Leading the “hosts” (both teams share the same home field) at the plate were Aidan Bonzagni (run), Connor Calderwood (run), Nate Coombs (single), Tim Farrelly (single, run), Jonah Carlson (single, 2 runs), Nate Bernard (double), Alex Bartlett (2 singles) and Andrew Peaco (run).

For the “visitors” of TD Bank-Rockland, Finnegan Lynch (single), Rhys Jones (run), Joey Curtis (single, run), Alex Sirois (2 runs), Matt Spear (2 singles, run, RBI), Aidan Munro (double, single) and Noah Burns (RBI) paced the offense.

Farrelly and Carlson pitched for Rockland Ford, as the two allowed six hits and five walks, with nine strikeouts. Burns and Sirois pitched for TD Bank-Rockland, as they allowed six hits and three walks, with five strikeouts.

Penobscot Bay Dentistry 7, P.G. Willey 1

At Belfast June 26, Penobscot Bay Dentistry completed its undefeated regular season with a win over P.G. Willey. The hosts scored two runs in the first inning, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth, while the visitors scored its lone run in the sixth.

Leading Penobscot Bay Dentistry at the plate were Brandon Cournoyer (double, single, 2 runs), Tommy Walker (single, run, RBI), Jason Bartlett (single), Patrick McConnell (run), Dylan Abbott (2 singles, 2 runs, stolen base), Matt LeBlanc (2 singles, RBI), Tanner Veilleux (RBI) and Eamon Goscinski (2 singles, run).

Waldoboro 8, Newcastle 1

At Waldoboro June 26, Waldoboro secured the third seed with a lopsided win over Newcastle. Waldoboro scored four runs in the first inning, three in the third and one in the fifth, while Newcastle scored one in the third.

Leading Waldoboro at the plate were Clayton Belcher (single, run, 2 stolen bases), Brady Carter (single, stolen base), Adam Berry (single, run, stolen base), Colby Castner (2 singles, 2 runs), Isaiah Staples (2 singles, 2 runs, stolen base), Rowan Ware (single, run) and Garret Hutchins (2 singles, run, 2 stolen bases).

Belcher pitched for Waldoboro, as he allowed three hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts.

Union Farm Equipment 15, Granite Coast Orthodontics 5 (5 inns.)

At Waldoboro June 26, the hosts scored runs in droves and swung past Granite Coast Orthodontics in a mercy rule-shortened affair. Union Farm Equipment scored three runs in the first, second and third innings, five more in the fourth and one in the fifth, while the visitors scored one in the first, two in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth.
