Owls Head — The 2018 Hemmings Motor News "Great Race" announced the winners of its vintage car rally that concluded in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, July 1.

In addition to various car class awards, a variety of specialty awards were given to participants and cities that had an impact on the Great Race family and spectators along the way. Included in the winners was Owls Head for "Best Lunch City," as the race made a pit stop at the Owls Head Transportation Museum June 27.

The overall winners of the 35th annual rally were Jeff and Eric Fredette of Beecher, Ill. The father-and-son team piloted a Flathead V8-powered 1933 Ford pickup truck to victory, earning more than $50,000.

The Fredettes have been a part of the Great Race family for many years, and according to Race Director Jeff Stumb, it was an emotional moment at the finish line.

"It was a long time coming for this father-and-son team, who had finished second on a few occasions, leading up to this milestone,” he said.

Great Race participants visited 18 hosted city stops throughout the northeastern United States, as well as in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada, in their pre-1972 automobiles. They also drove a specific route with designated speed changes, challenging turns and the feat of keeping a vintage car running for more than 2,300 miles which began in Buffalo, N.Y., June 23.

A four-member Team OHTM placed 34th out of the 118 finishers, driving a 1935 Ford V8 Phaeton donated by owner Harvey Geiger of Hilton Head, S.C.

The four members of Team OHTM included: Events Director Toby Stinson, Technology & Infrastructure Manager Aedan Jordan, Ground Vehicle Conservator Warren Kincaid and Automotive Crew volunteer Ron Quebec.

The Great Race announced its plans to rally along the west coast of the United States for its entire 2019 event – a first for this rally -- starting June 22 in Riverside, Calif., and concluding in Tacoma, Wash., June 30.

Congratulations to OHTM and to the winner of the race. I didn't have to work that day and had a great time while I was there.
