Owls Head to postpone vote on airport agreement

By Stephen Betts | Nov 25, 2020

Owls Head — Selectmen have decided to recommend a postponement of a vote on the proposed interlocal agreement between the town and Knox County over future growth at the airport.

The special town meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Nov. 30, at the downstairs community room at the municipal building.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Tom Von Malder said selectmen will open the meeting since it has been scheduled and then ask residents to postpone action until mid-April. At that time, the weather will be warmer and a meeting could be held outside if needed, he said. There may also be a vaccine available the to help protect the public, Von Malder said.

Residents had been asking for a delay both because some say there has been a lack of space in the room compared to how many people may turn out for the meeting, but also because they said the proposed interlocal agreement has not been adequately vetted.

Opponents of the proposed agreement argue the new agreement would take away the town's ability to regulate growth at the airport.

The county maintains the Federal Aviation Administration will not accept the older agreement any longer because it restricts the FAA's ability to manage needed improvements at the airport.

The current agreement, approved in 2001, expires July 1, 2021. The county can issue a notice to void the agreement which can be done with 90-days notice.

Changes in the wording of the town's flood plain ordinance is also on the town meeting warrant. That article could be acted on by people who attend the meeting.
