Camden — One could not ask for two more competitive, exciting, down-to-the-wire games to determine the Coastal Youth Football League champions for 2019.

The two contests that played out on Saturday, Oct. 26 on a brilliant fall day at the Camden Snow Bowl needed extra action to determine a winner — which simply proved how equally-matched the opponents.

In the end, Medomak outlasted Oceanside 19-13 in overtime for the third- and fourth-grade jayvee title and Belfast bested Five Town 25-19 in triple-overtime to take home the fifth- and sixth-grade varsity crown.

As Naomi Miller, president of the CYFL stated, "Great day of football" and called the varsity game "epic."

Indeed it was.

In youth league football, in a tie game at the end of regulation, each squad had possession of the ball on the 10-yard line and got four plays to score, including a point-after try. Each of those rounds is an overtime and they continue until one team scores and then stops the other.

Earlier in the varsity playoffs, Medomak beat Boothbay 12-0, Five Town beat Medomak 25-6 and Belfast beat Oceanside 12-7.

Both also scored in the second overtime — but failed on extra-point tries — to make it 19-19. In the third OT, Five Town had the ball first but could not score and Belfast followed with a TD on a fourth-and-goal play to pull out the victory.

Jayvees

The game was tied 13-13 after regulation before Medomak scored in OT and held Oceanside out of the end zone to preserve the 19-13 victory.

Medomak coach Simmons said it was a "great team win. Defensively, Jaydiin Ruiz, Cole Esancy, Owen Harvey, Colby Simmons, Cameron Harris and Liam Gould made key tackles.

"Offensively, Colby Simmons led the way with three rushing touchdowns. He completed a few passes to Jaydiin Ruiz and Cole Esancy. We also had great lead blocking throughout the day from Jayden, Colby, Cole, Owen and Cameron.

"Oceanside is a great team and battled us right to the end."

Medomak finished 8-0 and allowed four touchdowns this season, two of which came in the championship game.

Oceanside coach Galley said his squad "relied heavily on Wyatt Bannow as he scored both TDs and had the bulk of the carries. Oceanside scored first on their opening drive of the game then fumbled on their next two drives. The second fumble coming after a touchdown was called back for illegal motion in the backfield. After being down 13-7 we made a few halftime adjustments that kept Medomak off the board in the second half and Bannow scored again on a sweep play to tie the game at 13 early in the fourth quarter.

"Defensively, Bannow, Case Galley and Bryce Gushee led the way with eight tackles each and Todd Reid and J.J. Morrison had strong efforts as well. It was a great game and three of the last four matchups between these two teams have been one score games.

"Medomak’s coach Keith Simmons does a great job and always forces us to be at our best. They have a great program over there and it’s starting to show at all levels. We can’t wait 'till nest summer to get back to work."

In the regular season, Medomak beat Belfast 26-0, Oceanside beat Lincoln County 20-0, Oceanside beat Boothbay 18-12, Boothbay beat Belfast 26-0, Medomak beat Lincoln County 19-0, Medomak beat Boothbay 20-7, Oceanside beat Belfast 34-7, Bootnbay beat Lincoln County 38-0, Medomak beat Oceanside 13-7, Medomak beat Belfast 20-0, Oceanside beat Lincoln County 45-0, Oceanside beat Belfast 19-0 and Medomak beat Boothbay 8-0.
