Candace Shy Hooper

Martinsville — Jackson Memorial Library will welcome Candace Shy Hooper Tuesday, July 17, at the Ocean View Grange, 435 Port Clyde Road/Route 131. As the second author in this year’s series, Hooper will present her latest work, “Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives.” The free event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m.

In her book, Hooper tells the tale of Ellen Sherman, Jesse Fremont, Julia Grant and Nelly McClellan, the wives and confidantes of Lincoln’s top generals. She extensively researched these women and their lives to present a compelling picture of their contributions to history.

With many of her pieces appearing in The New York Times, the Journal of Military History and the Michigan War Review, Hooper also has been recognized as an award-winning poet with work chosen for inclusion in District Lines.  Besides speaking and writing on military history, she serves on several historical advisory boards for national preservation sites.
