October is national Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month and we have a number of young and young-at-heart dogs waiting for new homes. We currently have more than two dozen wonderful dogs in house waiting to be adopted.

Awesome dogs like Turner, our pet pick of the week. Turner is a big, slobbery, 4-year-old goofball of a dog who will brighten even the gloomiest of days with his big smile, even bigger heart and his silly ways. Turner is loving, affectionate and very playful. He is happy to romp around with his fellow canines or snuggle with his humans. If you are looking for a happy-go-lucky pooch, then stop in and meet Turner.

We have great news to share. Long-term resident Snow, our handsome black-and-white Akita, after more than a year of patiently waiting, has finally found his happily-ever-after in a home with a wonderful couple. It may take a week, a month or even a year, in some instances, to find the right home for our animals. But, here at Pope Memorial Humane Society, we are committed to doing just that. And with your help, we can continue to do that for all the animals in our care. Stop in today and see if we have your next best buddy -- be they dog, cat, furred or feathered.

Have you ever thought of volunteering? We could use your help. We are always looking for dedicated volunteers to help us care for the animals and the facility! Our next volunteer orientation is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7. If you are interested in coming to volunteer with us, contact Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Gould to learn more and RSVP at volunteers@hskcme.org or 594-2200.

Are your returnable bottles and cans piling up? Consider recycling them for a good cause -- helping homeless animals at the shelter. You can join the Hannaford Clynk program, which makes it really easy. We have special coded bags at the shelter that you fill up and then drop off at Hannaford. No counting. No waiting. No mess. Your returnables are automatically credited to PMHS's account. To get your bags, stop by the shelter or call Anna at 691-4930. Alternatively, you can drop off your bottles/cans at the Thomaston Transfer station in the specially marked bin to benefit the shelter. Every bit helps and it adds up quickly. Thank you.

Wish list: Large and kitchen garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, wet cat food (pate style) and gift certificates to Walmart, Staples, Amazon and other local businesses. Thanks for your support.
