Oceanside to hold graduation at county airport

By Stephen Betts | May 19, 2020
The Knox County Regional Airport will be the location for the 2020 Oceanside High School graduation.

Owls Head — The Oceanside Class of 2020 will be able to take flight to their post high school lives at the Knox County Regional Airport.

The airport in Owls Head will be the location for this year's graduation.

The graduation will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, with a rain date of Wednesday, June 10.

The ceremony will be held outside on the airport tarmac immediately inside the fence adjacent to the terminal and parking area. Flights will be diverted from that section of the airport during the ceremony.

The ceremony will be preceded by a car parade to the airport, Oceanside Principal Jesse Bartke said May 19.

Each student will be allowed one car in the parade, but a second car can be requested to accommodate a split household or large immediate family. There are 89 graduates including five exchange students and two juniors who completed their studies in three years.

Students will line up in small groups to receive their diplomas. Parents or guardians will be able to accompany each student onto the stage where they can share a celebratory hug, handshake or high-five, the principal said.

Students and families may remove masks for a formal graduation photograph immediately after receiving their diploma. Otherwise masks must be worn when outside vehicles or when windows are rolled down, he said, noting that the school is adhering to the state and Maine Department of Education health guidelines. Families must maintain six-feet distances from other families during the ceremony.

Details on picking up caps and gowns will be issued next week.

Customary graduation ceremonies across the country have been postponed or canceled because of the concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

Last week, Bartke announced that a one year reunion will be held in spring 2021 for graduates from the class of 2020.

The senior prom for 2020 has been canceled. All members of the class of 2020 will be gifted a ticket to the 2021 Prom.

The honors brunch has been rescheduled for August.

Scholarship Night will be broadcast virtually Thursday, June 4.

The inspiration ceremony will be broadcast virtually and will be a student produced event Sunday, June 7.

The last day of in-school education was March 13. Since then, education has been conducted remotely.
