Bangor — Oceanside High School student Alexa Barstow of Thomaston received the award for fiction in the Youth Competition at the Maine Literary Awards June 13 at the Bangor Public Library.

The Maine Literary Awards is an annual statewide competition sponsored and coordinated by the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance.

Barstow, 15, will be a junior at the high school in the fall. Her childhood interest in reading turned into a passion for writing, and it was her initiative that helped establish the school's new literary magazine for students, "Psyche."

She has also worked with the Skidompha Public Library in Damariscotta on its literary magazine, Epoch.

The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance announced the winners in all of its categories at the event in Bangor. The categories included book awards for fiction, crime fiction, speculative fiction, nonfiction, poetry, anthologies, drama and youth categories for the 2019 Maine Literary Awards. The awards — which honor books published during 2018, as well as adult and youth manuscripts in drama, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry — brought in a large number of submissions.

This year, 139 books were entered across the award’s categories. In addition, more than 60 manuscripts were submitted to the award’s Short Works and Drama Award competitions, and nearly 70 Maine students submitted work in the same categories in the award’s Youth Competition.
