Belfast — It would be hard for Oceanside sophomore pitcher Chloe Jones to pitch better than she has in her last two games — including, most recently, the Mariners' Tuesday, April 25 road high school softball contest at Belfast.

After twirling a no-hitter against Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield on Monday, April 24, Jones followed that performance with a one-hit shutout — with her Mariner teammates adding plenty of offensive firepower — in a 13-0, 5-inning victory just about 24 hours later.

Jones struck out eight and yielded no walks, allowing only a fourth-inning double to Belfast’s Maya Cunningham. In her last two games, Jones has struck out 21 batters against only four walks, while yielding only one hit.

The game originally was scheduled to be played on Friday, April 21 and was moved to Saturday, April 22, but was switched again due to persistent rain and poor field conditions.

Macy Gale worked the first three innings in the pitching circle for Belfast, while Brooke Richards tossed the final two frames. The duo combined to allow 11 hits, six walks and two hit batters, with seven strikeouts.

Leading the Oceanside hit parade were Casey Pine (3 singles, 2 RBIs), Hannah Moholland (double, single, RBI), Morgan Heal (2 singles, 4 RBIs), Abby Veilleux (2 singles, RBI), Alexis Mazurek (double, RBI) and Kalli Grover (single).

Oceanside pulled away with an eight-run third inning and added five more in the fourth for good measure.

Mariner coach Rusty Worcester said that along with Jones’ “tremendous performance,” first-year varsity player Morgan Heal also had her best performance of the young season with a two-hit, four-RBI effort.
