Thomaston — Oceanside Middle School celebrated Veterans’ Day Friday, Nov. 8 with a special breakfast, followed by an assembly honoring local veterans.

Darren Randall, who organized the event for the second year in a row, stated that the assembly had been happening for at least a decade.

Breakfast was donated by local businesses and parents. The cafeteria was decorated by student council, who also greeted the veterans as they arrived. Students with family members who had served enjoyed the breakfast with them.

Ian Anderson of the Thomaston Police Department played the bagpipes to lead the veterans into the gymnasium for the assembly. The veterans sat in a place of honor in the middle.

American Legion Post #1 acted as the color guard and presented the colors once everyone was seated.

Jason Seiders, a sixth grader at Oceanside Middle School, led the pledge of allegiance, followed by the OMS band playing the "Armed Forces Salute Medley." The band was directed by Angela Johnson.

Dr. Jason White, who served in both the Army and the National Reserves, then spoke about his life and experience in the military. He also spoke about attending college, and then took questions from the students. Many students had questions about Dr. White’s time in the military, and he thoughtfully answered all of them. Dr. White lives in Rockland and currently teaches research classes at the University of Southern Maine.

After the speech were student council presentations and student presentations about the history of Veterans’ Day and what it means to them. The OMS chorus, conducted by Marian Hotopp and accompanied by Sybil Wentworth on piano, then performed.

The assembly concluded with the Legion retiring the colors.
