By Staff | Dec 27, 2012

Rockland — The following is a synopsis of the 2012-13 Oceanside High School indoor track team, along with independent athletes from Medomak Valley and Camden Hills:

Coach/years coached current team: Jesse Bartke, fifth year.

Last year's record/playoff information: The Mariner girls finished second (68 points) at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships and the Mariner boys 11th (7), while the Mariner girls were 17th (7) at the state Class B championships. The Mariner boys did not qualify for the state meet.

Roster: Seniors Sam Johnson and Renee Landry; juniors Katie McGuirl, Samantha Calamari, Cole Chase, Jeb Fontaine, Abby Hersom, Jacob Hyatt, James Nguyen, Bronson Philbrick, Josh Poor, Mackenzie Sirois and Laura Swanson; sophomores Rebecca Akselsen, Henry Berry, Peyton Billingsley, Brian Haskell, Elena Laustsen, Jackie Thorbjornson, Joshua Tang and Nick Mahar; and freshmen Daly Winterich and Michaela Wright.

Also competing with the Mariners this year are independents from Medomak Valley and Camden Hills, including seniors T.J. Harriman (MV), Emily Lopez (CH) and Desiree Leary (MV); juniors Amanda Young (MV), Ben Trapani (CH), Brittany Bowman (CH) and Josh Hensler (CH); sophomores Nicole Nicholls (MV) and Alexa Genthner (MV); and freshman Melissa Kessel (CH).

Outlook: The Mariners, along with the Panthers and Windjammers, have been working well as a team during the early parts of the regular season, and Bartke has been encouraged by the team's progress.

"The [student-athletes from the] three schools really gel together and push each other, making an exceptional training group," the coach said. "I am excited to see how they progress over the course of the season."

The veteran coach said Hersom, Bowman, Trapani and Nicholls all could vie for conference and state titles, but "don't count out some of the younger athletes," such as Mahar, Billingsley, Thorbjornson, Genthner and Kessel, Bartke said.
