Rockland — The rain and cold temperatures did not dampen the spirits of the Oceanside High School graduates of 2018 as they received their diplomas Tuesday night, June 5.

With 114 total graduates, 70 students will pursue post-grad programs such as trade school, community college and four-year universities. Five of the graduates are planning on doing a post-grad year at the Mid-Coast School of Technology, five are going into the military, and the rest will be working with at least six becoming fisherman.

Principal Jennifer Curtis was unable to attend the graduation and speak as planned due to an injury. Instead of having a teacher or administrator reading off the names for the diplomas, the names were read by Joshua Peaco and Casey Pine.

The most memorable part of the evening was when Elliot C. Spear performed, for the last time, what appeared to be a spirit roller coaster in which he got in front of the all the new graduates and acted out riding a roller coaster as the class acted with him.

Speeches were given by salutatorian Kristina Ferguson and valedictorian Gabrielle Simmons.

“Our GPA does not define our intelligence or our potential for success, our group of friends does not define our destiny or the people we will become," Ferguson said. "We stand here today in the same caps and gowns a blank canvas.”

Whereas Simmons' address was focused on dreaming ahead. She urged graduates to pursue what makes them happiest no matter the income or outcome of said dream.

The Oceanside High school class of 2018’s motto is, “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
