Rockland — The Oceanside Class of 2021 held its graduation ceremony June 9 at Wasgatt Field in Rockland, with 116 students knowing they managed to adapt to a pandemic-challenged year.

Oceanside's graduation started with a vehicle procession across Rockland, led by police and fire trucks that went from one end of Broadway to the other.

The 116 seniors received diplomas at Wasgatt Field under sunny skies. The ceremony was delayed by one day and relocated to the athletic field from the Knox County Regional Airport in Owls Head because of Tuesday's intense heat.

Regional School Unit 13 Superintendent John McDonald said he struggled with what to say to the students after a year dominated by a hybrid schedule of in-person and online learning brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I respect the mature way you were able to adjust and deal with disappointments," McDonald said.

He said he was proud of them, as they rose to the challenges. He said the graduates are poised for the next steps in their lives.

Valedictorian Erin Corcoran and Salutatorian Alexa Barstow gave speeches in front of classmates, family and staff.

Students received a combined $228,620 in local scholarships. In addition, students received $407,591 in post-secondary financial aid.
