Rockland — After a strong road victory to open the season, the Oceanside football team returned to its friendly home turf on Friday night, Sept. 7 at Wasgatt Field, where it hosted Nokomis of Newport.

The Mariners were 1-0 and Warriors 0-1 on the young season before Friday's meeting under the lights.

The opponents provided plenty of excitement on a glorious night for high school football, but, in the end, visiting Nokomis carved out a 31-20 early-season victory.

In one sequence, in fact, in front of a large crowd, Nokomis scored on a pass that was nearly intercepted and then tipped to a Warrior, who scampered down the sideline for a score.

Seconds later, the ensuing kick was fumbled by Oceanside, but picked up by Zach Cody, who streaked down the left side to paydirt for a quick answer.

The loss did not hurt the Mariners in the early-season standings, however.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Oceanside (1-1, 9.3750 points) is first and Nokomis (1-1, 7.8125 points) second. There are 11 teams in the region, as eight qualify for the playoffs.

Nokomis lost to Winslow 28-20 to start the season, while Oceanside bested host Mount Desert Island 40-30.

Oceanside scored eight points in the second quarter and six in the third and fourth stanzas, while Nokomis tallied nine in the second, 14 in the third and eight in the fourth.

Some say football is a game of inches and the ball bounces funny ways. That clearly was on display at Wasgatt Field Friday night as the Nokomis used a balanced attack to take an early lead and was able to walk away with a hard-fought win.

Quarterback Andrew Haining completed 8-of-14 passes for 158 yards and two TDs, plus an interception, and Nokomis racked up 186 yards on the ground on 34 carries and two TDs to edge the Mariners.

The Warriors were led on the ground by Tyler Pelletier with 85 yards on 11 carries and a TD. Quinton Richards, who replaced the Warrior lead rusher Alex Costedio in the first half, rumbled for 26 yards and a TD in the second half.

Zack Cody led the scoring for the Mariners with a 77-yard kick return for a TD, a two-point conversion and a 16-yard TD reception from Karl Ilvonen. Michael Yates plunged in from the one-yard line in the second quarter to put the Mariners on the board.

The Mariners rushed for 273 yards on 48 carries, but three fumbles inside the Nokomis 35-yard line stifled Mariner drives.

The Mariners were led by Cody (115 yards, TD, 2-point conversion on 16 carries), Ben Ripley (109 yards on 18 carries) and Yates (49 yards, TD, on 14 carries).

Ilvonen finished 3-of-7 for 33 yards and a TD for the Mariners.

After a scoreless first quarter, Nokomis got on the board when Haining hit Chance Graves on a 17-yard scoring strike. Cade Kreider’s extra-point kick was deflected and fell short to give the Warriors an early 6-0 lead.

The Mariners took the lead with 54 seconds left in the half when Yates plunged in from the one and Cody rushed for the two-point conversion. The TD run was set up by back-to-back runs by Ripley (21 yards) and Cody (15 yards) to the Nokomis one.

Nokomis returned the kick to its own 36-yard line. Haining completed two passes for 38 yards and was aided by a 15-yard penalty to get the Warriors to the Mariner-16. Kreider’s field goal was good with one second remaining in the half and the Warriors led 9-8.

On the first series of the second half, the Mariners stuffed the first two Warrior running plays and Haining’s pass for the intended receiver was tipped by a Mariner defender and landed in Graves' hands and he ran untouched 55 yards to the end zone to give Nokomis a 15-8 lead.

On the ensuring kick, the ball bounced the Mariners' way when it was misplayed and Cody alertly scooped it up and ran 77 yards down the home sidelines to bring the score to a 15-14 Warrior lead.

Haining mixed the plays on the next drive and Richards rambled up the middle for a 14-yard TD and then tacked on a two-point rush to push the Warrior edge back to 23-14.

The Mariners put together another eight-play drive before turning the ball over on a fumble. Three plays later, Mariner linebacker Jacob Curtis picked off Haining to set up the Mariners on the Warrior-44.

The final score came when Tyler Pelletier swept in from the 6-yard line. A broken extra point try was saved by Haining, who picked the ball up and scored the two-point rush around the right side.

The scoring summary included:

Nok — 17-yard TD pass from Haining to Graves, kick failed, 8:13, second quarter.

Ocean — 1-yard TD run by Yates, Cody rush, 0:54, second quarter.

Nok — 33-yard field goal by Cade Kreider, 0:01, second quarterr.
