Camden — State inspections for passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and trailers are now offered at the family-owned and -operated Nighthawk Fleet Maintenance.

Automotive maintenance and repair is a family tradition for Robert French Sr. and his three sons, Robert Jr., Jeffrey and Michael.

They looked into licensing their three-bay garage on Hosmer Pond Road for state inspections, Robert Jr. said, after the Camden Irving inspection and service station on Elm Street closed this year. He, his father and Jeffrey are all licensed for passenger vehicle and commercial truck inspections, and Michael, who is a welder, specializes in fabrication and technical welding. The doors on the 2,000-square-foot garage are built so that commercial vehicles can get into the bays.

In addition to the new inspection services, Nighthawk does "a little bit of everything," Robert Jr. said, including brakes, front-end and exhaust work, and mounting and balancing tires. It also takes care of protective undercoating, sandblasting, frame repair and some rust repair work, including rocker panels and cab corners.

Robert Sr. worked as SAD 28's bus mechanic for 42 years, just retiring earlier this year. Following in their father's footsteps, Robert Jr. and Jeffrey trained for the automotive business, earning associate degrees at Eastern Maine Community College and Northern Maine Community College, and Mike, earned an associate degree in welding from  EMCC.

The business also takes on some custom restoration work, and specializes in restoration of the Scout, an off-road vehicle made by International Harvester from 1961 to 1980.

Nighthawk Fleet Maintenance is at 82 Hosmer Pond Road, and is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, call 236-4757, 322-7949 or 542-3606.

Editors note: Information in the story was corrected regarding the degrees earned by Jeffrey and Mike French.
