Net gains for tennis players in MRC's New Year's Open event

Rockport — The tennis courts were packed Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 5-6 as the Midcoast Recreation Center hosted its New Year's Open tournament.

It is an annual United States Tennis Association tournament that attracts players from Maine and other New England states, as well as area players.

"This was one of the biggest tournaments that MRC has hosted," said tennis directory Seth Meyer. "It is always so great to have a weekend packed with great people and great tennis."

After two days of competition, the winners were:

Men's open singles — Aaron Diamond, Moultonborough, N.H., beat Hung Trieu, Leominster, Mass., 4-6, 7-6, 6-0.

Women's open singles — Sarah Gray, Woolwich, beat Paige Evans, Cumberland Foreside, 7-5, 6-2.

Men's open doubles — Chris Kemp, Tenants Harbor, and Lewis Wheelwright, Rockport, beat Jerome Faure, Portland, and Matt Vonvogt, South Bristol, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Open mixed — Tanner Tanter, Warren, and Betsy Kingsley, Cushing, beat Spencer Gray and Sarah Gray, Woolwich, 7-5, 7-6.
