Net gain: Windjammer boys to vie for Class A North regional title

Camden Hills girls, Medomak Valley, Belfast squads cap spring campaigns with postseason losses

The postseason swung in on the tennis courts as six Midcoast high school squads had high hopes to serve up playoff victories Tuesday through Saturday, June 1-5.

And of those six teams, one remains at the end of Saturday's action, as the Camden Hills boys will vie for a regional championship in the coming days.

On Friday in Class A North boys semifinal action, No. 3 Camden Hills (13-0) swung to a 5-0 victory over No. 2 Brunswick (11-3) and advanced to the regional championship on Tuesday, June 8 at 8:30 a.m. at Lewiston High School.

On Wednesday, the Windjammers dispatched of No. 6 Skowhegan (8-6) in the quarterfinals.

The Windjammers semifinal win came one day before the Panther boys (11-4) were eliminated from playoff contention with a hard-fought, 3-2 semifinal loss to top-ranked, undefeated Waterville (14-0) on Saturday in Class B North.

Medomak Valley had previously defeated No. 5 Ellsworth (10-4) 5-0 in the quarterfinal round and No. 13 Hermon (1-13) 5-0 in the prelim round.

On Thursday, in Class A North quarterfinal girls action, No. 6 Camden Hills (8-4) fell 4-1 to No. 3 Hampden Academy (10-3). The Windjammers had previously defeated No. 11 Oxford Hills of South Paris (1-12) 5-0 in a prelim playoff.

In Class B North Tuesday, on the boys side, No. 9 Belfast (5-8) fell 3-2 to No. 8 Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft (11-3).

In Class B North, on the girls side, No. 12 Belfast (4-9) fell 4-1 to No. 5 Ellsworth (11-2), while No. 14 Medomak Valley (2-11) lost 5-0 to No. 3 Caribou (12-0).

Boys

No. 1 Waterville 3, No. 2 Medomak Valley 2

At Waterville June 4, the Purple Panthers did just enough to knock the Panthers out of the Class B North playoffs.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Coleman Swain lost to Charlie Haberstock, 1-6, 1-6; Isaac Swain lost to Owen Emery, 2-6, 2-6; and Zach Cheesman lost to Josiah Bloom, 2-6, 4-6.

In doubles, Ian Doughty and Zan Nguyen defeated Logan Tardiff and Jay Brock, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2; and Noah Ludwig and Jack Duncan beat Cole Bazakas and Nick Poulin, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

No. 3 Camden Hills 5, No. 2 Brunswick 0

At Brunswick June 3, the Windjammers made quick work of the Dragons and advanced to the regional championship.

The individual results, with Camden Hills players listed first, were: In singles, Ezra LeMole beat Calvin Doherty, 6-3, 6-2; Owen Markowitz beat Merrick Mearden, 6-1, 6-0; and Noah Thackeray beat Isaac Albaugh, 6-4, 7-6(7-2).

In doubles, Lincoln Pierce and Kyan Mohammadi beat Jacob Scrapchansky and Alex Sharon, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4; and Espen Wold and Liam O'Dwyer beat Felix Battle and Nathan Levy, 6-4, 6-1.

No. 3 Camden Hills 5, No. 6 Skowhegan 0

At Rockport June 2, the Windjammers sailed past the visitors and into the semifinals of the playoffs.

The individual results, with Camden Hills players listed first, were: In singles, Ezra LeMole beat Dawson Turcotte, 6-2, 6-0; Owen Markowitz beat Jacob Steeves, 6-0, 6-1; and Noah Thackeray beat Caleb Johnson, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Lincoln Pierce and Kyan Mohammadi beat Ethan Staples and Dom Clifford, 6-1, 6-0; and Espen Wold and Liam O'Dwyer beat Caleb Daigneault and Asa Stroman, 6-4, 6-0.

No. 4 Medomak Valley 5, No. 5 Ellsworth 0

At Waldoboro June 2, the Panthers won their second playoff match in as many days, this time over the Eagles.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Coleman Swain beat Ben Osterlin, 6-2, 6-1; Isaac Swain beat Liam Stephenson, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1; and Zach Cheesman beat Tate Carter, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

In doubles, Ian Doughty and Zan Nguyen beat Koa Barrett and Kai Barrett, 6-4, 6-1; and Noah Ludwig and Jack Duncan beat Dallas Flood and Everett Hackins, 6-0, 6-1.

"Ellsworth was a very solid, well-coached team, but all of the Medomak [Valley] boys really stepped up and played some excellent tennis," said Panther coach William Hinkley.

No. 4 Medomak Valley 5, No. 13 Hermon 0

At Waldoboro June 1, the Panthers made quick work of the Hawks and prowled into the quarterfinal round.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Coleman Swain beat Pat Verrill, 6-0, 6-1; Isaac Swain beat Cooper Jensen, 6-1, 6-2; and Zach Cheesman beat Corbin Hamm, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Ian Doughty and Zan Nguyen beat Chase Flanders and Cody Butler, 6-0, 6-0; and Noah Ludwig and Jack Duncan beat Nick Peterson and Ethan Hallett, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 8 Foxcroft Academy 3, No. 9 Belfast 2

At Dover-Foxcroft June 1, the Ponies did just enough to advance to the next round of the postseason with a win over the Lions.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Kyle Agbuya lost to Caleb Fockens, 1-6, 0-6; Ethan Hall lost to Lucas Ronco, 2-6, 4-6; and Daniel Snyder beat Karen Bekmez, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles, Steven Friel and Zubar Yacoe defeated Josh Cornett and Caleb Crocker, 6-1, 6-1; and Eli Slaughter and Zeke Slaughter lost to Andres Gutierrez and Lorenzo D’Andrea, 1-6, 3-6.

Girls

No. 3 Hampden Academy 4, No. 6 Camden Hills 1

At Hampden June 3, the Broncos galloped past the Windjammers and into the semifinal round.

The individual results, with Camden Hills players listed first, were: In singles, Kat O'Brien lost to Mikiko Frey, 4-6, 1-6; Eliza Nickelson defeated Annika Bragg, 6-3, 6-4; and Julie Russell lost to MacKenzie Patterson, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6.

In doubles, Kaitlin Heintzman and Zoe Hansen lost to Ana Schmidt and Sam Quensel, 2-6, 0-6; and Mila Bonometti and Amelie Wold lost to Chandler Smith and Ella Baldwin, 4-6, 5-7.

No. 6 Camden Hills 5, No. 11 Oxford Hills 0

At Rockport June 1, the Windjammers sailed past the Vikings and into the quarterfinals.

The individual results, with Camden Hills players listed first, were: In singles, Kat O’Brien beat Yuping Wen, 6-0, 6-0; Eliza Nickelson beat Sydney Youngs, 6-0, 6-2; and Hannah Fiske beat Megan Mitchell, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Julia Russell and Mila Bonometti beat Page Temple and Kate MacDonald, 6-0, 6-1; and Ilanna Lam and Amelia Wold won by forfeit over Oxford Hills.

No. 5 Ellsworth 4, No. 12 Belfast 1

At Ellsworth June 1, the Eagles rose to the occasion and soared past the lower-seeded Lions.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Madison Farris beat Bailey Clarke, 6-2, 6-1; Jasmine Cunningham lost to Sierra Andrews, 2-6, 0-6; and Ada Curry lost to Megan Jordan, 1-6, 1-6.

In doubles, Josie Cowles and Taylor Lemon lost to Jocelyn Boudreau and Grace Gumpp, 5-7, 0-6; and Sarah Cournoyer and Liana Gobin lost to Kahlan Keene and Briana Kane, 1-6, 1-6.

No. 3 Caribou 5, No. 14 Medomak Valley 0

At Caribou June 1, the Panthers made a nearly 500-mile round trip to come up on the short end of the stick against the talented Vikings.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Elle Ashmore lost to Sage Dubay, 2-6, 3-6; Lizzi Swan lost to Liria Bouchard, 0-6, 1-6; and Medomak Valley lost by forfeit at third singles.

In doubles, Gabby Sawyer and Ana Underhill lost to Mia Theriault and Naomi Cote, 0-6, 1-6; and Hadley Angell and Micaela Lorentzen lost to Jayden Fournier and Kallee Parent, 2-6, 4-6.
