Nancy Copeland

Oct 30, 2018

South Chatham, Mass. — Nancy (Polky) Copeland, 83, died peacefully in her home Oct. 24, 2018.

Nancy was born and raised in St. George, where she was married and began her family. Later she moved to Groveland, Mass. She was a skilled seamstress and with a friend created Daffy Duds Originals. Her sewing continued throughout her life, making wedding and prom dresses.

Nancy moved to South Chatham in 1979, where she built a home and lived there until she died.

Nancy was active in life and for several years spent every Tuesday going out to breakfast with her friends. As an experienced knitter, Nancy hosted a knitting group in her home, Knit Wits, creating beautiful hand-knitted designs.

She spent many years doing foster care for the elderly. Nancy was very proud of her Finnish heritage; making nisu bread and being the descendant of a Mayflower passenger. But her greatest love was the love she had for her 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, whom she adored.

Nancy was predeceased by her daughter Ruth. She is survived by her daughters Kathleen Twombly of Chatham, Mass., Suzanne (William) Lavalley of New Hampshire, Leslie Copeland of Harwich, Mass., Jean Copeland (Brian Skinner) of South Chatham, Mass., and Jane Crosby of Portland; her three brothers, Adrien (Diane) Polky of Fort Kent, Timothy (Kim) Polky of St. George and Hildane (Roni Scammon), also of St. George, as well as their families, and many family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. at Wiley’s Corner Baptist Church, St. George. Another service will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at Redemption Rock Church in Chatham, Mass., where she always felt comfortable and loved.

Blessing for the family. I was once a "Knit Wit", but not in her time. We knit at the Rockland Community Center weekly. Many hats and mittens, plus scarfs were donated to the Head Start children. Condolences to the family.
