Tenants Harbor — The St. George Parks & Recreation Department and boosters will harbor their 24th annual Mussel Ridge Hoops Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, March 16-17 at the St. George School in Tenants Harbor.

Featured in the 2019 tournament are fourth-grade (and a few second- and third-grade) boys and girls from St. George, Thomaston, Cushing, Camden, Rockport, Spruce Head, Rockland, Owls Head and South Thomaston.

This year’s tourney will look slightly different with a Saturday (instead of Friday) start due to fewer available girls teams. The girls will play a round-robin format with a championship game on Sunday. The boys will continue to be a double-elimination bracket.

The games begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. as the St. George boys host Camden and at 10:30 a.m. the Cushing boys entertain Thomaston. The St. George girls face Camden at noon. Games will sail on every hour and a half with the final game of the day at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday’s championship games start with the girls at noon and the boys at 1:30 p.m. As with any double-elimination tournament, there is the possibility of another girls championship game at 3 p.m. and/or another boys title game at 3:30 or 4 p.m.

The continued success of the MRHT is due to the dedicated work of community volunteers, said Ben Vail, parks and recreation director. If one would like to be a Mussel Ridge volunteer, email Vail at b.vail@stgeorgemaine.com or call him at 701-9754.

The double-elimination tourney offers at least a dozen exciting youth basketball games,"lots of delicious hot and cold foods, with many homemade specialties and goodies, tons of snacks, a souvenir program complete with team rosters, local information, puzzles, games, etc. And most importantly a gym[nasium] full of players having fun buoyed by positive and supportive fans," Vail said.

Admission is $4 for adults on Saturday. On Sunday, admission is $2 due to the reduced schedule. Admission gets one in to all games on that date and with a first admission one receives a free commemorative program.

There also will be a special raffle which features a Jayson Tatum autographed basketball.

"So mark your calendar and plan to charter your way down the peninsula to catch some of our future local high school basketball stars in action," Vail said.
