Rockland — A 72-year-old New Hampshire woman was injured July 31 when a car pulled out in front of her and collided with her motorcycle.

Charlotte Pinder of Gorham, N.H., was driving north on Route 1 (Camden Street) by the Breakwater Marketplace when a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle, driven by Michelle Gabrielesen, 53, of Rockport, pulled out onto the street.

The Rockland police report stated a driver in a car that stopped in the middle lane of the road waved to Gabrielsen, indicating it was clear for her to pull out onto the street.

Pinder was thrown from the motorcycle and onto the hood of Gabrielsen's vehicle where she slid off landing on the road.

Pinder was wearing a three-quarter open-face helmet. She suffered an injury to her left elbow and was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport by Rockland emergency medical services. Her motorcycle was towed from the scene because of the extent of damage.

The car was able to be driven from the scene.

The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. July 31.

The crash was investigated by Officer Jeff Aeschlimann.

When I was young & foolish (now I am old and foolish) it was a joy to ride my motorcycle on a hot summer day.  However, I stopped riding nearly 25 years ago because of situations just like this.  People are in a big hurry to go nowhere and all too often do NOT SEE people on bikes.  Riding in todays distracted traffic environment is extremely dangerous and just plain foolish if you're not wearing a helmet.

I got stuck in the traffic heading North on Camden Street that was somewhere between slow and stopped. When I got to the Breakwater Marketplace, a flat tow truck driver was starting to drive the motorcycle onto the flatbed. As the picture shows, the motorcycle was okay, it just needed taking away. My guess, which was true, that the motorcycle ran into the side of something and the rider went over the bars onto the vehicle run into. When I got to Pen Bay, a Rockland Ambulance was there and someone was being loaded into a helicopter.
