Motherhood duties complete, Eowyn is ready for a home of her own

Although homes, businesses and organizations, including ours, will soon deck the halls in red and green, here at P.A.W.S,. we’re still knee-deep in the tawny colors of fall. From our kennels to our cat rooms and condos, we’ve lately seen a run on furry coats rich in shades of brown, tan and russet.

Among the newcomers in the cat category are numerous kitties with the coloration known as “tortoise,” or “tortie” for short — an all-over, confetti-like riot of brown and tan streaks against a black or dark brown background. Torties are almost always female, and they are simply stunning to behold. Eowyn is a fine example. This pretty, playful young kitty arrived with three kittens. She did a good job raising her litter, and now that her babies have all been adopted, it's time for her to find a family of her own. We guarantee hours of entertainment, snuggles and multicolored joy for the lucky person who adopts her.

Not a cat, but nonetheless consistent with the tortoiseshell theme is Odin. Yes, our beautiful Shepherd mix has returned to P.A.W.S. and has just celebrated his first birthday here. How we wish that this wonderful boy with so much to offer could find a forever home and never again have to celebrate birthdays or holidays in a kennel! Odin is looking for a home with no other pets and an owner who will continue his education in the fine art of obedience. After a few sessions with him, our trainer reported that he’s unusually smart.

You might not know it from the shelter’s prevailing color scheme, but we’re rapidly shifting into holiday mode. Once our big fundraiser, the Auction for the Animals  Nov. 30, is behind us, we’re looking forward to a tree-lighting ceremony at our headquarters at 123 John St. in Camden, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 9. You can be part of the fun by buying a light or lights for the tree in honor of the pets you love or have loved. Lights are available at the shelter; online at; and at Loyal Biscuit, Maritime Energy, Dunkin Donuts, Adventure Advertising and Aubuchon Hardware. Then join us for the official lighting Dec. 9, complete with hot cocoa , cookies and a surprise guest appearance! For more information, give us a call at 236-8702.
