Waldoboro — There will be no Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020.

After inducting a handful of deserving members each year since its inception nearly 15 years ago, MSHOF board members have decided not carry on the tradition this year due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

A new group will be elected and enshrined in 2021, said Dave Ames, the organization's secretary/treasurer. The 13th annual inductees were honored in October.

On Thursday, May 14, the board of directors held a Zoom meeting and decided to suspend MCSHOF activities for 2020 due to the coronavirus, he said.

Ames said the only function the organization will tend to is to ask area high school athletic administrators to give the hall of fame names of two female and two male student-athletes from their schools to be considered for the 2020 athletes of the year.

Later this year, the board will meet to decide on the two individuals who will be recognized, as the 2020 male and female high school athletes of the year, and honor the duo at the 2021 hall-of-fame induction banquet.

Additionally, expiring board of directors' terms will be extended one year.

"The board hated to make this decision, but felt as though it was best for all involved as we move forward during these unsettling times," Ames said.

The annual induction banquet is held at the Rockland Elks Lodge on upper Rankin Street in October and the physical hall-of-fame is located in the same building as Dow's Discount Furniture (across from Dow Furniture) on Route 1 in Waldoboro.
