Rockport — Registration is open for Midcoast Recreation Center’s 6U and 8U ice hockey programs for the 2019-20 season.

This year, MRC introduces a free program for 6U players called the rookie program, which is an entry-level program designed to teach the basics of hockey and ice skating for those who have never played hockey before. The program lasts for one month, after which participants will graduate to the learn to play hockey program, where they will continue to learn the fundamentals of hockey and prepare to enter the 6U hockey team, the Mighty Mites.

Those programs begin in October. The rookie program is free for all participants, while the learn to play hockey program is $20 a month.

MRC also offers the rookie program for children ages 7 and older, as well as the learn to play hockey program for youngsters ages 7-15. The 7+ rookie program and the learn to play hockey program is $30 a month.

The Mighty Mites season runs November to March, costs $195 and includes Friday practices in November, Monday and Friday practices from December to March and two jamboree events.

Players born in 2011 can join the 8U hockey team, the Mites. The team practices Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., with time off around the holidays. The team plays in cross-ice games on Saturdays from 8 to 9 a.m. The season runs from October to March and costs $400 for the season, which includes 70 on-ice hours of instruction and two separate tournaments.

Equipment is available for free for children who commit to the program and MRC has an excellent financial assistance program. Part of MRC’s mission is to not turn anyone away due to an inability to pay. One can find the financial assistance app on MRC’s website midcoastrec.org or at their front desk.
