Midcoast foursome excels at Elks district 'Hoop Shoot'

Bath — Rockland Elks Lodge 1008 "Hoop Shoot" qualifiers moved on to the district competition on Sunday, Jan. 6.

Audrey Mackie of South Thomaston finished first in the 12- and 13-year-old girls group as she made 19-of-25 foul shots.

Grace Mackie of South Thomaston finished first in the 8-9 girls group and netted 22-of-25 free throws.

Jackson Kay of Rockland finished first in the 10-11 boys group as he connected on 16-of-25 foul shots.

Soren Johnson of Camden finished second in the 8-9 boys group with 17-of-25 free throws.

The Mackies are sisters.

The first-place winners move on to the state competition on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Bangor High School.

The national event is in Chicago.

The local competition was held on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Flanagan Community Center in Rockland.

In that event, Johnson netted 15-of-25 foul shots to finish first for 8-9 boys, while Grace Mackie netted 15-of-25 free throws to win the 8-9 girls group.

For the boys 10-11 group, Kay made 17-of-25 to finish first, while the 12-13 girls winner was Audrey Mackie, who iced 20-of-25 foul shots.

Others participants in the local event were Matthew Bodman of Owls Head, in the boys 10-11 group, who made 9-of-25 free throws, as well as Rachean Dotson of Rockland, who made 13-of-25 shots in the 10-11 group.
