Rockland — The MidCoast Diaper Project plans to start dispensing diapers to local families March 11. The group intends to provide diaper supplementation for those in need through the Area Interfaith Outreach Food Pantry, 70 Thomaston St.. This comes after the closing of another, unrelated diaper supply organization.

The Midcoast Diaper Project, founded by Sara Spencer, Diane List and Molly Staples, started planning its mission in December 2018. Accelerated by the uncertainty of federal paychecks this winter, it has created a system that will provide diapers and diapering supplies to those in need. While people do not need to apply or qualify, they must request diapers through the website, MidCoastDiaperProject.com, or in person at the AIO Food Pantry.

Diapers will be distributed through the food pantry on a scheduled basis, during normal AIO business hours. MDP’s goal is to create a sustainable program through which people can pick up their products consistently for as long as there is need.

Donations of disposable diapers, cloth diapers, creams, ointments and wipes are being accepted. Disposable diapers can be donated in partial packages. Creams, ointments and wipes must be unopened. Both new and used cloth diapers are being accepted.

The MidCoast Diaper Project has drop boxes at the following locations:

Sweet Pea's Family Consignment, Rockland

The Landings Restaurant/Eat Soup, Rockland

Little Learners, Rockport & South Thomaston

Pen Bay Pediatrics, Rockport

Rockland Harbor YMCA, Rockland

Fresh off the Farm, Rockport

The Maine State Prison, Warren

Additionally, donations may be dropped off at the AIO Food Pantry during its business hours.

Monetary donations can be made as well to purchase supplies. Donate through the website, the Facebook page, Clynk or PayPal. Contact the organization for pickups or mailing address for checks or shipments.
