Meet our April Pet of the Month!

Finley is a 12 year old English Cream golden retriever who has been with his family, the Weilers, since he was a puppy. April happens to be his birth month, so on the 23rd he will be turning 13 years old--a very admirable age for a golden of his size (90lbs)! Finley is his family’s fourth golden retriever, and as any pet owner knows, it is almost impossible to choose a favorite because each pet holds a special place in your heart. But, as his family says, “Finley is the king; there could not be a dog with a better personality.” All of us at CHFA have spent a great deal of time with Finley and at this point, we honestly couldn’t agree more!

At first glance, Finley, also known as Fin and Finny by his family, is your typical laid back golden retriever. He loves just about everyone, including dogs and people of all ages. Whenever he greets someone in the house, he will have one, two or three stuffed animals in his mouth, and in his 13 years on this earth, he has never once torn one up. He simply has the most gentle soul, and this was especially seen when his owners’ first grandchild was born. Finley would sit by her and watch her intently, eventually landing him the nickname “nanny dog” by his family.

Aside from his laid back nature, Finley loves to engage in many family activities. If you’re going somewhere in the car, Finley is happy to tag along whenever and wherever you are going. He has been hiking, skiing, running, and participating in every family activity since he was a puppy. As Wendy says, “there is no leaving him home”! He has also been a boat dog since he was a puppy, happy to sail or powerboat in the ocean and run around on the islands off the coast of Maine. Goldens are usually known for being water dogs, but not Finley. He would prefer to travel by boat than swim, or to simply sit by the pond in the backyard and watch the frogs (they stare back!) and wade through the shallow water.

While Finley is still intent on doing many of the things that bring him joy, he has slowed down with age in the past few years. He has arthritis, for which he gets several joint supplements and pain management medications as well as routine cold laser therapy treatments at the clinic every week. With these treatments his owners have noticed a considerable improvement in his spirits and mobility, so he is able to continue to provide his family with the unconditional love that we all search for in a good dog.

Thank you to Finley for being such a good boy and for continuing to bring a smile to our faces with the simple wag of his tail and his happy old golden retriever energy. We also appreciate the dedication and loyalty the Weiler family has shown their animals and our clinic for over 3 decades!
