Waldoboro — The possible top seed for the Kno-Wal-Lin (Knox-Waldo-Lincoln county) COVID Basketball Tournament hung in the balance in the Friday night, Feb. 26 boys basketball game between Oceanside and Medomak Valley, as the high school teams, along with Camden Hills of Rockport, sported 8-2 records when the Panthers and Mariners headed into the late-season showdown.

And the Mariners — despite being down five players due to a myriad of reasons — hung with the talented Panthers through much of the 32-minute affair.

Oceanside held an early lead, but the hosts went on the offensive and quickly seized control and did not relinquish that en route to a 60-45 victory over the visiting Mariners.

The victory gave Medomak Valley a 9-2 record, while Oceanside, which also lost to the Panthers 59-48 earlier in the season, fell to 8-3.

Camden Hills, also 8-2 heading into Friday night’s game with Belfast, earned a 77-48 win, which gave the Windjammers a 9-2 record and the top spot in the standings due to their two wins over the Panthers this season.

However, Oceanside and Camden Hills are finished for the regular season, Medomak Valley can claim the tournament’s top seed with a home win over Lincoln Academy of Newcastle on Tuesday, March 2 in its final contest.

The Panthers beat the Lincoln County-rival Eagles 67-41 earlier in the campaign.

On Friday, the Panthers jumped to a 19-9 lead after the first eight minutes and continued to keep the Mariners at arms-length throughout the game, as the hosts led 29-22 at halftime and 41-36 after three quarters.

Jacob Craig led the Medomak Valley attack with an 18-point effort, while Trevor Brown tossed in 16; Patrick McKenney, 10; Parker Morrison and Jake Bickmore, six; and Blake Morrison and Finn Parmley, two.

Friday’s game was only the second time this season a player other than Brown or McKenney led the Panthers in scoring, with the other being Aiden Starr in an early-season contest against Camden Hills.

“Jacob Craig was huge for us tonight,” said Medomak Valley coach Nick DePatsy. “He has a beautiful shot for a big and he rebounded and defended the weak side really well, which put him in position to rebound better.”

Bodhi Ames paced Oceanside with 14 points, while Everett Allyn added nine; Gavyn Tower, eight; Elliot Lucier, four; Alex Bartlett and Cohen Galley, three; and Austin Chilles and Hayden Jacques, two.

The Panthers were 9-of-15 (60 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Mariners were 12-of-14 (86 percent).

Oceanside was without five players — four of which saw regular playing time and two of which were starters — Friday night, with two being injured and three being absent due to being in close contact to a confirmed case of COVID-19 this week at Oceanside High School.

So, the Mariners dug deep into their bench Friday and had several younger players — thrust into larger roles — turn in strong efforts on the court.

“I was very proud of how the kids rose to the challenge of playing a very good team, on the road, while being shorthanded,” said Oceanside coach Larry Reed. “They battled hard for four quarters, but just ran out of gas. No excuses. Medomak was the better team tonight.”

Additionally, the Panthers will be without senior spark plug Brandon Starr for the rest of the season due to a recent back surgery.

“[Losing] Brandon hurts us a lot,” said DePatsy. “Just his toughness and presence changes a game so much. People have to realize it’s not about scoring, it’s about having those kids that go above and beyond that make a team click.”

Allyn got Oceanside on the board quickly with a three-pointer, but Brown's hoop off a Mariner turnover and Bickmore's free throw tied the game.

Ames put Oceanside back on top after rattling in a layup, but a McKenney three-pointer gave the hosts the lead for good and Brown extended the Panther advantage to 8-5 after a jumper from the elbow.

After a pair of Ames foul shots, the Panthers went on a 10-0 run — a Bickmore jumper from the top of the key, back-to-back hoops by Brown off an offensive putback and an alley-oop layup in transition off a pass from midcourt by McKenney, a McKenney jumper and a trey from Craig — to give the hosts a 19-7 lead.

The Mariners cut their deficit to six points on three occasions in the second quarter and actually sliced the deficit to 31-30 after an offensive putback by Tower midway through the third, but the hosts scored seven straight after a hoop from Brown, back-to-back jumpers from Craig and a free throw by Parker Morrison.

Oceanside kept things interesting in the final eight minutes, as the Mariners trailed by five points after a trey from Lucier, but Medomak Valley scored the last 10 points of the game late to pull away.
