Thomaston — Oceanside boys soccer coach Matt Petrie would be the first to admit his squad did not get off to a great start on Thursday, Sept. 7 against rival Medomak Valley of Waldoboro. The Panthers sure did.

The difference between winning and losing a pitch match often can be simply capitalizing on opportunities. In this game, the Panthers did just that against the Mariners.

The visitors pumped in a pair of early goals and added a third for good measure late in the first half, which was all the cushion the Panthers needed en route to a 4-1 win at Sam Pendleton Field.

Joey Horovitz booted in a pair of goals in the win for the Panthers (2-1), while Zach Cheesman and Wyatt Post added one for the visitors.

Uriah Thongsophaphone had the lone score on the day for the Mariners (0-2).

Aiden Starr made two saves in goal for Medomak Valley and Gavyn Tower seven saves in net for Oceanside. The visitors held a 12-5 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

“[The] score looks worse than it was,” said Petrie. “[We] gave up a couple quick and played better after that. Much better than last game. We are growing as a team too and I’m proud of the effort.”

Cheesman and Horovitz scored in the first nine minutes of the contest to put the Panthers ahead 2-0 before Horovitz added another with 1:06 to play in the half.

Thongsophaphone got Oceanside on the board five minutes into the second half, but Post added a score with 27:30 remaining to round out the goals.

The squads again will play on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in Waldoboro.
