St. George — The cause of a fire that destroyed a workshop and a 46-foot fishing boat Oct. 2 is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office

Fire marshals were on scene Thursday morning, Oct. 3, looking for the cause of an intense fire that broke out the night before at Clark Island Boat Works off Route 73 in St. George.

"We're all scratching our heads this morning," Fire Chief Tim Polky said.

He said the building and the boat were completely engulfed in flames and giving off intense heat when firefighters arrived at the scene after 8 p.m. Oct. 2.

No one was injured.

St. George Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Owls Head, Thomaston and South Thomaston.

Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies also responded and closed part of Route 73 to traffic on the night of the fire.

The company is owned by Dan MacCaffray of St. George and Polky said he believes the company has insurance coverage.

Polky said firefighters worked at the boat works until 3:30 a.m. and returned to the scene at 9 a.m. to put out a remaining hot spot. The fire chief has also met with two state fire marshals, who are interviewing witnesses as part of the investigation.

The circumstances of the fire are similar to a fire that destroyed a building at Clark Island Boat Works on March 22, 2000. That fire was also reported just after 8 p.m. It destroyed two fishing boats. The Fire Marshal's Office determined it was accidental, but never found the exact cause, according to reports in The Courier-Gazette at the time.
