Belfast — Midcoast Actors' Studio summer musical theater senior camp will present “Rent: School Edition” Friday, July 21, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, July 22, at 3 and 7 p.m. on the Troy Howard Stage, 173 Lincolnville Ave./Route 52.

“Rent: School Edition” is the high school version of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning rock opera musical written by the late Jonathan Larson. Loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera “La Bohème, “Rent” tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City's East Village. Set in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS, the show deals with a variety of themes including homelessness, drug addiction, love, sexuality, disease and death. The school edition eliminates some of the coarse language and tones down some public displays of affection of the original.

The cast includes Phoebe Norman as Roger, Maci Burgess as Mark, Taylor Yeaton as Mimi, Piper Sewell as Collins, Sofia Barnard as Angel, Elaine Landry as Maureen, Robyn Walker-Spencer as Joanne and and Mercedez Whitmore as Benny, with Grayson Koelbl, Matt Yost, Madison Johnson, Talia LaRue and Abby Donnelly as ensemble members playing multiple roles.

The production is directed by MAS Producing Artistic Director Jason Bannister, who teaches performing arts and directs the drama club at RSU 71’s Troy Howard Middle School. Music direction is by Anna-Marlies Hunter, who teaches music in Nobleboro’s AOS 93.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. For more information, visit Midcoast Actors' Studio Summer Musical Theater Camp on Facebook or email
