Mariners split early-week meet, Spears, Blackwell key at tourney

Four Oceanside mat athletes pin down top-four finishes at Cheverus

Rockland — Mat athletes from Oceanside had strong showings in two high school meets in three days over the long weekend, which included a Monday event on Martin Luther King Jr. day.

The Mariners picked up victories on the holiday over Gardiner 36-18 and Mount Blue of Farmington 42-18, while the team fell to Belfast 55-17 and Skowhegan 41-18 in a home meet on Monday, Jan. 20. in Rockland

Additionally, for the Spear family, it was a banner day on the mats on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Cheverus-hosted tournament in Portland.

The three mat athletes helped propel Oceanside to a seventh-place finish among 14 opponents, most of which the Mariners do not tussle with in the regular season.

Brothers Matt Spear (1st at 182 pounds), Silas Spear (2nd at 120) and Seth Spear (4th at 132) were three of the four Mariners to pin down top-four finishes, with Kaleb Blackwell (3rd at 220) the fourth, to lead Oceanside to 66 points.

The team scores were: Mountain Valley of Rumford 139.5, Cheverus of Portland 127, Kennebunk 126, Biddeford/Thornton Academy of Saco 106, York 99, Windham 94, Oceanside 66, Deering of Portland 63, Fryeburg Academy 55.5, Monmouth Academy 37, Gardiner 16.5, Cheverus JV, Greely of Cumberland and Hall-Dale of Farmingdale no score.

The individual Oceanside results from Jan. 20, with Mariner wrestlers listed first, were:

120 pounds — Carter Fogarty won by forfeit over Gardiner and Mount Blue; pinned Gavynn Young, Bel; and pinned Michael Welch, Skow.

138 pounds — Seth Spear pinned Colby Labonte, Gar; won by forfeit over Mount Blue; lost to Michael Ham, Bel; and lost to Rachel Tuck, Skow.

160 pounds — Bennett Penney pinned Devyn Purington, Gar; pinned Steven Smith, MtB; won by technical fall over Gabe Kelley, Bel; and beat Hunter McEwen, Skow.

170 pounds — Nat Small was pinned by Dana Purington, Gar; pinned Erik Williamson, MtB; pinned Jackson Lapierre, Bel; and lost to Jack Melvin, Skow.

182 pounds — Matt Spear pinned Daimon Clark, Gar; was pinned by Brian White, Bel; and pinned Kaden Salley, Skow.

195 pounds — Matt Spear pinned John Howard, MtB.

220 pounds — Kaleb Blackwell won by forfeit over Gardiner and Mount Blue; lost by major decision to Ben Watts, Bel; and beat Caleb Pratt, Skow.

285 pounds — John Burchett won by forfeit over Gardiner and Mount Blue; was pinned by Rayon Kirby, Bel; and was pinned by Brayden Doucette, Skow.

The individual Oceanside results from Jan. 18, with Mariner wrestlers listed first, were:

120 pounds — Silas Spear received a first-round bye; pinned Jillian Lindgren, Frye, at 0:24; and was pinned by Sean Radel, Ken, at 0:23 in the championship final. Spear finished second.

132 pounds — Seth Spear pinned James Holly, Yor, at 4:50; was pinned by Kaleb Burnette, Bid, at 4:34; won by major decision over Kayden Soiett, Gar, 12-2; and lost to Liam Doherty, Chev, 4-2 in the consolation final. Spear finished fourth.

138 pounds — Josh Jackomino was pinned by Max Merrill, MtVal, at 0:51; and was pinned by Marek Pasieniuk, Ken, at 2:23.

170 pounds — Nat Small beat Austin Goslant, Wind, 7-4 in a pigtail match; was pinned by Pius Olango, Bid, at 1:59; and lost by tech-fall to Dana Purington, Gar, 16-0.

182 pounds — Matt Spear pinned Lincoln Fournier, Deer, at 0:27; pinned Jason Hart, Wind, at 4:16; and won by major decision over Aushe Edmond, Bid, 8-0, in the championship final. Spear finished first.

195 pounds — Devin Guptill was pinned by Thomas Cressey, Bidd, at 1:13; pinned Emily Wiggin, Chev, at 0:26; and was pinned by Jonah Byman, MtVal, at 0:46.

220 pounds — Blackwell pinned Mohammed Al Ahmad, Deer, at 1:15; was pinned by William Orso, Yor, at 2:32; pinned Gabe Winson, MtVal, at 2:35; and pinned Seth Beyea, Bid, at 1:59 in the consolation final. Blackwell finished third.

285 pounds — John Burchett was pinned by Chris Fortin, Ken, at 0:50; received a bye; and was pinned by Matt Belantoni, Chev, at 1:15.
