Rockland — As Oceanside's lone senior, it was Grace Woodman's moment, before the game, to step into the spotlight and be congratulated for a stellar varsity career, but, on the court for this particular contest, one certainly could make the case it turned out to be sophomore Abby Waterman's night.

While Woodman was her usually strong, consistent self, Waterman proved immense at putting the ball in the net and ripping it off the backboards. Oh, and she also was pretty adept at taking the ball from Medomak Valley and giving it to her teammates.

The play of Waterman, Woodman and Audrey Mackie, along with others, helped the Mariner girls high school basketball team finish the regular-season portion of their pandemic-shortened campaign 11-0 and with the number one seed for the regional playoffs.

On Friday afternoon, Feb. 26, Oceanside used solid all-around, unselfish play to pull away from Midcoast rival Medomak Valley en route to a 58-33 victory.

Waterman finished with 20 points, 18 rebounds, including six offensive, seven steals and four assists to key the hosts. Woodman added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Mackie chipped in 14 points, two steals, two assists and three steals. Anna Kingsbury added seven points and grabbed five rebounds and Emily Sykes had three points and four caroms. Ahlivia Morris tallied two points.

Woodman, Mackie and Kingsbury buried three-pointers and the Mariners made 17-of-24 free throws (71 percent). Mackie ended 7-of-8 (88 percent) from the foul line and Waterman 6-of-8 (75 percent).

For Medomak Valley, Autumn Ripley scored 10 points; Abby Lash and Maya Cannon, six; Katherine McKenney and Addison McCormick, four; Alyssa Creamer, three; and Sara Nelson, one. The Panthers netted 10-of-16 foul shots (63 percent) and McKenney and Creamer connected on trifectas.

The Mariners, who also defeated the Panthers 60-51 earlier in the season, improved to 11-0, while Medomak Valley dropped to 9-2, with its only losses to Oceanside.

The Panthers will complete their regular season on Tuesday, March 2 with a game at Lincoln Academy of Newcastle at 6:30 p.m.

With Friday's win, Oceanside also finished as the top seed for the Kno-Wal-Lin (Knox-Waldo-Lincoln county) COVID Basketball Tournament.

At this point, the standings include: Oceanside 11-0, Medomak Valley 9-2, Belfast 5-7, Boothbay Region 4-7, Mount View of Thorndike 4-8 and Camden Hills 3-8.

There are a few final regular-season games on Tuesday, March 2 but they will not affect the playoff standings.

Thus, in the first round of the single-elimination playoffs played by Friday, March 5, No. 5 Mount View plays at No. 4 Boothbay Region and No. 6 Camden Hills plays at No. 3 Belfast. No. 1 Oceanside and No. 2 Medomak Valley receive first-round byes.

In the second round, played by Saturday, March 6, the No. 4 Boothbay Region-No. 5 Mount View will play at No. 1 Oceanside and the No. 3-Belfast-No. 6 Camden Hills winner will play at No. 2 Medomak Valley.

The survivors will meet on Tuesday, March 9, at the site of the higher seed, for the postseason championship.

In Friday's game, Oceanside grabbed a 7-2 lead after breakaway hoops from Waterman and Mackie, before Cannon's two free throws with 3:45 left lifted the Panthers within 7-4.

With 1:54 left, Woodman drilled a trey to give the hosts an 11-4 advantage. Waterman's two foul shots made it 13-7 before McKenney connected on a three-ball to keep the visitors close at 13-7.

Creamer's trey early in the second quarter brought Medomak Valley within 14-10 and three Panther free throws, including two from Lash, made it 20-15 with just under two minutes to play in the half.

However, Mackie went to work to score five straight points, including two foul shots and a trifecta, to give the hosts a 25-15 lead.

Waterman kept the ball rolling for the Mariners with a hoop on her own putback to make it  27-15 early in the third stanza. Ripley's eight points in the second half helped to keep the game close, but, ultimately, Oceanside had too much Waterman, Mackie and Woodman and the Mariners sailed to their 11th victory of the campaign.
