Rockland — When the Oceanside and Camden Hills girls basketball teams stepped on the court on Friday night, Dec. 13 the Mariners and Windjammers hoped to use the high school game as an early-season measuring stick on their progress a few weeks into the campaign and, at the same time, gauge where they stood against a longstanding area rival.

The Midcoast foes played well in spurts and combined for a competitive court affair into the second half before the hosts slowly gained separation en route to a 62-45 victory over the visitors.

With the victory, the Mariners improved to 2-1, while the Windjammers dropped to 0-3.

The opponents, whose schools are separated by about six miles, are relatively young, as Oceanside has only one senior in Molly Gould, who played a pivotal role in the Mariner victory Friday.

Oceanside has several freshmen and sophomores who play significant roles, along with standout junior Grace Woodman.

The Windjammers have three seniors in Audrey Bowman, Kaylyn Krul and Grace O'Connell, all of whom fill key roles, along with a bundle of freshmen and sophomores.

On Friday, the foes faced off in a close, fast-paced affair that saw Oceanside lead 14-8, 27-24 and 46-37 at the quarter breaks.

Down the stretch, the Mariners kept the Windjammers at arm's-length with solid team passing and staunch defense. Oceanside also made a majority of its free throws and had a secret, slashing, nearly unstoppable weapon in Gould.

Gould tossed in 27 points, many on nifty cuts to the basket that resulted in left-handed layups or foul shots, which she calmly sank. Gould made 7-of-8 free throws (88 percent).

In fact, the Mariners turned in a standout performance from the foul line as they made 25-of-36 free throws (69 percent).

Also for Oceanside, Audrey Mackie added 10 points; Abby Waterman, eight; Katherine Freeman, five; Anna Kinsbury, four; Woodman, three; and Abby Hersey, one. Mackie also made all six foul shots.

Waterman also grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked two shots, while Kingsbury (4 rebounds, 2 steals), Gould (3 rebounds), Mackie (2 steals), Ahlivia Morris (2 rebounds), Woodman (4 rebounds) and Freeman (2 rebounds) contributed to the victory.

For the Windjammers, Tessa Whitley and Krul turned in strong all-around efforts and seemingly were everywhere on offense and defense. Whitley tallied a team-high 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Krul added seven points and five rebounds.

O'Connell also had seven points and two rebounds for Camden Hills, while Tess Jalbuena-Cook added six points and three rebounds; Bailey Curtis, six points and two rebounds; Audrey Bowman, four points; and Ella Powers, two points and two rebounds. Ella Graffam also secured two rebounds.

Camden Hills made 9-of-18 foul shots (50 percent). O'Connell netted the only two 3-pointers of the game for either team.

While Whitley's six points helped the visitors get off to a quick start, Gould and Mackie netted six and four, respectively, and Waterman added two to give the hosts a six-point first-quarter advantage.

The contest tightened in the second eight minutes as Whitley added four more points, Krul three and Bowman, Curtis and Powers two. O'Connell also drilled the first of two treys of the night. Waterman's four points and three from Freeman keyed the Mariners, who clung to a 27-24 edge at the halftime break.

Netted foul shots helped the Mariners increase their lead to nine points at the end of the third quarter. The hosts made 13-of-18 free throws (72 percent) in the stanza, while Gould, who scored all her points in three quarters, tallied 11 points, including all five shots from the charity stripe.

For the Windjammers, Krul and O'Connell scored four points and Whitley three to keep the visitors in the game.

Too many backdoor cuts to the hoop for layups by Gould in the fourth quarter — she added 10 more points in the final eight minutes — proved too much for Camden Hills to overcome, although Jalbuena-Cook netted six points in the final eight minutes to give the Windjammers a boost.
