Winslow — It was the first time the Oceanside girls lacrosse team took to the grass for the 2021 high school spring sports season, and also the first time athletes were allowed to not wear masks per the Maine Principals' Association pandemic safety protocol adjustments on Wednesday, April 28.

Despite it being easier to breathe, the blood pressure probably was high as the Mariners were locked in a close battle with the Black Raiders, but, despite the fact the visitors climbed within two goals late, the Mariners could not get over the hump in an 11-8 loss.

Winslow led 5-2 at halftime.

Lainie Hooper led the Mariners with six goals — two in the first half and four in the second — while Martina Straka and Olivia Dougherty notched a goal in the second half.

Lydia Laslavic made 14 saves — seven in each half — in net for Oceanside.

Statistics for Winslow were unavailable.

"It was a nice first game out, with lessons in team play, communication and movement," said Oceanside coach Angie Vachon. "It was a tough game, full field, seven-on-seven — in a game that fields 12 on each team — but we all were happy to be playing sans masks, and it was glorious.

"The Mariners recognized better spacing on the field [after the first half], but still had two great end-to-end runs in the second half with defensive players Makayla Gleba and Vandrieli 'Dri' Barcellos, which gave our midfielders a chance to recognize to stay back behind the restraining line and a little rest.

"The team as a whole did a fine job working together to switch field positions and subbing out. Most everyone played in all areas of the field of play. All team members who did the draw — Lainie Hooper, Mareh Willis, Straka, Jordan Beal and Dougherty — were all very new to that skill, and an impressive job was done by all.

"The Mariner defense — Gleba, Barcellos and Jessica Franklin — did a yeomen’s job, as with many transitions they found themselves in a three-versus-four situation, which allowed for greater use of communication skills and improved movement throughout the game. Sophia Clayton’s movement on offense had her open many times in front of our scoring cage and opportunities to win the ball on an over shot.

"We are excited to be building throughout this season, and today’s game is a testament to the teams care for each other, their growing understanding of skill and it’s implementation."
