Waterville — The No. 11 Oceanside softball team’s trip to the Class B North prelim playoffs proved a short one in 2021 as the Mariners trekked north to face No. 6 Waterville.

The Purple Panthers, behind talented pitcher Raylee Gilbert, dazzled in the pitching circle and at the plate en route to a 15-5 high school diamond victory on a hot, hazy, humid afternoon Monday, June 7.

With the win, Waterville (11-6) advances to the quarterfinal round, where it will face No. 3 Nokomis of Newport (11-5) or No. 14 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield (2-13).

Oceanside’s season concluded at 6-11.

“That’s a good team,” said Oceanside coach Wes Drinkwater of the Purple Panthers. “They’re well-coached and that pitcher is a hell of a pitcher. She’s only a sophomore so she’s going to be really good. And the rest of their team played well in the field, they hit the ball and we lost to a better team. No shame in that.”

Waterville, which also beat Oceanside 18-6 earlier in the campaign, scored three times in the first inning, once in the second and third, six times in the fourth and twice in the fifth and sixth frames. Oceanside plated three in the third and singles runs in the fifth and seventh.

The Purple Panther offense was keyed by Abby Williams (2 singles, RBI, 2 runs), Raylee Gilbert (double, 2 singles, 2 RBIs, 4 runs), Savanna Cormier (2 doubles, single, RBI, 3 runs), Ebba Heaton-Jones (single, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Jess Mayo (home run, double), Gillian Poulin (single, 2 RBIs), Camille Chabre (run), Hayley Dunn (single, run) and Yuliya Paquette (run).

For the Mariners, Maddie Ripley (3 singles, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Jess Watkinson (single), Ava Philbrook (single, run) and Lexi Knowlton (2 runs) paced the offense.

Grace Pratt pitched for Oceanside and allowed 14 hits and five walks, with seven strikeouts. Gilbert pitched for Waterville and allowed five hits and two walks, with 12 strikeouts.

Waterville took a 1-0 lead early when a run came in on a passed ball and extended its advantage to 3-0 later in the frame when Mayo connected on a two-run home run to left field.

Oceanside clawed back later in the game and fought to within 5-3 after a two-run double by Ripley and a run-scoring single by Watkinson, but Waterville got an RBI-double by Gilbert and two more runs came in on an error after Heaton-Jones laid down a bunt as Waterville’s advantage swelled to 8-3.

The Purple Panthers continued to churn out run-scoring hits and, ultimately, distanced themselves from the visiting Mariners.
