Rockland — After playing six regular-season matches, the Oceanside girls lacrosse team added three more shortened home affairs on Saturday, June 5 thanks to its own postseason tournament at sun-splashed Wasgatt Field.

Oceanside hosted the 2021 Mariner Mayhem Girls Lacrosse Round Robin amid glorious late-spring weather as the Mariners welcomed Boothbay Region, Hampden Academy and Winslow.

There were six matches on the day.

The results included: Mariners and Seahawks tied, Raiders beat Broncos, Seahawks beat Raiders, Mariners and Broncos tied, Raiders beat Mariners and Seahawks beat Broncos.

The event included 25-minute running time matches, with the final minute stopped time. There was 10 minutes between matches.

Oceanside coach Angie Vachon said the Mairners, Raiders, Broncos and Seahawks enjoyed an opportunity to extend their club/jayvee seasons "with learning, growing field sense, along with team play. Throughout the morning, the game play was well-done by all and gave the fans a great morning of lacrosse. It was nice to host all the teams, but it was especially sweet to see the Broncos love of the game and excitement to play, as they are in their first year in a club status. They have a strong number of girls and even brought some of their middle-schoolers to watch from the bench."

For the Mariners, goalie Lydia Laslavic finished with 15 saves; Lainie Hooper, six goals and two assists; Makayla Gleba, four goals and assist; Jordan Beal, three goals and assist; and Sophia Clayton, assist.

"Martina Straka’s last game of the season was testament to her growth in the game with several draw wins, drawing a shooting space violation, ball placement and ground-ball contesting," Vachon said. "Holly Davis was a super aid to her team playing defense with a stand-your-ground mentality causing a few turnovers and pushing her opponent away from the goal. She did not hesitate as I asked her to cover for a teammate on offense and did a fine job in her brief stint there. Jordan Beal, found herself open a myriad of times and great opportunities to score. Dri Barcellos is an outright force on defense and her drive to get the ball to the open space and feed the offense has just gotten better with each game. Makayla Gleba played on both ends and in the middle for her team today with sharp catches, a quick release on goal, ground-ball wins and a contagious enthusiasm.

"Collectively the Mariner offense moved the ball the best out of our season and it was great to see the improvement in patience, movement, spacing and feeding of the ball. The defense worked superiorly together, switching players, covering for each other, hustle by midfield to get back … The whole team of mighty Mariners really took care of it throughout the morning’s games. The teamwork, communication and ease served them well and kept us very close in score to our opposing teams two of which we fell to in in-season play."

Vachon thanked Eastern Tire Service for its sponsorship of the event and coaches Karla Thayer of Hampden Academy, Cora Clukey of Winslow and Bill Goldenberg of Boothbay Region for bringing their teams to the tourney, fans who traveled to the event, Mary Britt, the school's athletic trainer, for being on site to deal with health issues, Oceanside athletic director Molly Bishop Harriman for support and keeping the field pristine, the three match officials and timer and scorekeeper Tom Vachon.
