Rockland — The Oceanside High School girls junior varsity basketball team enjoyed a stellar campaign on the hardwood in 2013-14, with the wins by far outweighing the losses by season's end.

Led by coach Samantha Wiley, the Mariners sailed to an 11-2 record, with their only losses coming to talented Lincoln Academy of Newcastle on two occasions.

Mariner team members included Jenna Conant, Emma Lee, Jillian Brooks, Kelsey Brooks, Haley Montgomery, Meghan McGonagle, Becca Boggs, Krissy McNichol, Kaylee McCorrison, Kate Kelly and Julia Barbour.

Through 13 games Oceanside gave up 28.5 points per game (370 total), a stat that Wiley is “proud to share.” The team also scored 43.8 points per game (570 total).

“Defense was certainly our strong suit and we were able to turn our defense into offense the majority of the time,” she said. “On the offensive end of the floor we had work to do and the girls responded very well.”

Wiley added that “foul shooting was a struggle, but every game more girls took the opportunity to look for their shots and began looking to take the ball strong to the hoop.”

“This is such a group of coachable young ladies, who I am so grateful I had the opportunity to meet and coach,” said Wiley. “The varsity ladies and the freshmen ladies fall within this statement as well. We have a great group of young women in our Lady Mariner basketball program and I cannot express how excited I am for summer basketball and next season.”
