Marina expansion opponents concerned about view, channel

Rockland — Christos Calivas argued Yachting Solutions Inc.'s proposal to expand its marina and make changes to Rockland harbor would mean blocking views from the public landing with mega-yachts.

Calivas is a member of the group SHIP, Sensible Harbor Infrastructure Plan, which opposes the Yachting Solutions proposal. Bill Morong of Yachting Solutions spoke to us recently and said there would be benefits to the project, which would create more docking for the city, attract larger yachts to the area and allow for partnerships with the city for improvements to Harbor Park.

Calivas said the city's planned improvements of Harbor Park, including expanding the boardwalk, are really a separate issue from the Yachting Solutions marina project.

He said most residents would rather see the view of the harbor and the breakwater from the public landing than parked mega-yachts. As for benefits to local businesses, he said the businesses would benefit more from the smaller boat traffic that currently uses the waterfront than from a few people who might come in massive yachts.

His other primary concern is that the plan would block the South Channel, which he said is very important. Eliminating that passage would create more boat traffic in a smaller area in the federal channel. He said that could actually be a safety concern.

Opponents have gathered 150 signatures for a petition. This process has also allowed the volunteers to talk to local residents about the issues.

However, Calivas said a compromise is a possibility and both sides hope for that. Morong has met with members of SHIP, and those conversations were beneficial, Calivas said. He said the ball is now in the developer's court.

Lots of big boats and loss of wonderful ocean view. Big boats can moor way out and motor boat in. Perhaps soon Rockland will become similar to Boston Harbor with ships galore, you think?
