Maple producers postpone Maine Maple Sunday weekend

Members join in statement postponing March 21-22 events

The Maine Maple Producers Association and its members issued a statement this afternoon urging that all Maine Maple Sunday events this weekend be postponed. No new dates are set as yet.

"As COVID-19 continues to spread and based on the recommendations from the CDC and local government officials, the Maine Maple Producers Association has announced that all Maine Maple Sunday Weekend® events should be postponed," the organization said.

"This was a very difficult decision and will significantly impact all members across the state, but as an association we feel this is the right thing to do for public health. We plan to host Maine Maple Sunday Weekend® when the timing is right. In the meantime, we encourage you to support your local maple producers in other ways during the maple season," the statement said.

Updates on a future event date and a member directory with phone numbers and websites to order products from your local Maine maple producers can be found at mainemapleproducers.com.

Waldo County producers include:

Sweet Freedom Maple Syrup, 345 North Palermo Road, Freedom, 314-5123.

Beaver Hill Plantation, 130 Sibley Road, Freedom, 382-6129.

Back Ridge Sugar House, 107 Boston Road, Winterport, 944-2575.

Simmons and Daughters Sugarhouse, 261 Weymouth Road, Morrill, 342-2444.

Kinney's Sugarhouse, 200 Abbott Road, Knox, 568-7576.

Maine Maple Sunday weekend attracts up to 100,000 visitors annually to sugar shacks throughout the state. In previous years, more than 60 sugar houses offered activities from Aroostook to York County.

The industry is made up of more than 450 maple producers licensed to sell maple products. The MMPA represents more than 250 members that are licensed maple producers. Producers range from small artisan producers to bulk syrup providers that serve major grocery store chains, foodservice distributors and retailers.

The state makes more than 575,000 gallons of syrup annually, generating more than $27 million for the Maine economy and supporting more than 560 full-time and part-time jobs that generate more than $17.3 million in wages.
