Many Flags to announce new board

Dec 05, 2012

Rockland — On Tuesday, Dec. 11, the new Regional Many Flags/One Community Board of Directors will begin their work.

The 21-member steering committee, that developed the new governance structure over the past 18 months, will launch the new Many Flags Regional Board of Directors at a special meeting to be held in the conference room at Fisher Engineering in the Rockland Industrial Park.

“This has been a longtime in coming,” said Alan Hinsey, executive director of the Many Flags Foundation, in a news release. “The Steering Committee is very excited to launch this new phase of the Many Flags/One Community project for our region,” Hinsey added.

The new Many Flags/One Community Regional Board spans three counties, seven school districts, and links six high schools, the Mid-Coast School of Technology, the University of Maine, the Maine Community College System, as well as private industry training partners.

"This is the first model in the state to achieve this level of region-wide integration — all centered around advanced career and technical education that will enhance workforce/economic development for our region," Hinsey said.

The initial work of the new Regional Many Flags Board will be focused on the coordination of programs and services for all high school, career and technical and higher education students in the region. Linking programs, sharing existing resources, coordinating curriculum and policies, offering early college and dual credits, and using technology to provide extensive virtual learning opportunities for all students in the region will be stressed.

In the future, as funds become available, a new campus is planned that will co-located and integrate a regional high school, a career and technical school, a higher education center and industry directed training centers.

State and local officials will be on hand to offer their congratulations and support for the Many Flags project. In addition, area business leaders will be in attendance to provide opening remarks at this milestone event in the life of the Many Flags/One Community project.

The public is encouraged to attend.
