Man charged for Rockport break-ins

By Stephen Betts | Mar 27, 2021

Rockport — An East Vassalboro man was arrested March 25 and charged with breaking into a garage and two vehicles in Rockport.

Winfried P. Cates, 47, was charged with burglary, two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle and two counts of theft.

An affidavit filed in the Knox County court by Rockport police stated the department  received a report from a resident that someone came to their door and rang the doorbell, but the person did not answer the door.

A short time later, the resident noticed the door knocker was removed, two vehicles in the garage were entered and money and gift cards were stolen.

The resident had a general description of the man and a dog he had with him. The incident occurred on Pine Brae Lane, which is off Route 90.

A short time later, an officer came upon a man who met the description. Officers asked if he had any weapons on him and he said he had some knives. Officers went to remove the knives before they questioned him further. Cates said where the blades were on him, and officers found the door knocker, according to the affidavit.

He was arrested based on that evidence, and a search of his person found gift cards and money.

He was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland. According to the affidavit, Cates was belligerent and threatening.
