MaineHealth announced March 13 that it is limiting visitation to the Knox Center and Quarry Hill long term care and assisted living facilities.

The decision was made with "the health and safety of our patients as our top priority and with guidance and support from our physician leaders," according to a statement issued by Director of Communications and Public Affairs Jen Harris.

"We recognize that limiting visits has a significant impact on our residents and their families. We did not take this decision lightly, and we are eager to restore full visitation when it is safe to do so," Harris said.

MaineHealth's medical leaders evaluated all of the guidance available and believe the best way to eliminate opportunities for infection and protect the health of residents and team members is to implement this action," according to the statement. We did not take this decision lightly, and we are eager to restore full visitation when it is safe to do so.

MaineHealth hospitals are well-prepared for infectious disease outbreaks in the communities we serve, and ask community members to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) by staying informed and following safety recommendations, according to the release.

COVID-19 is a new virus that causes flu-like symptoms. Most cases are mild to moderate. Older adults and people with pre-existing medical conditions, may experience more severe respiratory illness. Symptoms may include: fever, cough, and/or shortness of breath.

Anyone who feels they need medical attention, is asked to call their primary care provider before going to a healthcare facility.

Those who do not have have a primary care provider and need emergency care, are asked to call the emergency department before going to the hospital emergency department.

MaineHealth states it is critical for to choose reliable sources for the latest information, as by both the Maine Center for Disease Control and the U.S.
